Equally as important as your performance itself, what you choose to wear can play a huge role in the success of your audition.

It is just as with every commercial; the character has a costume that reflects their role. Likewise, you have to wear something that reflects your role — a person applying for a commercial.

Dressing is a very delicate issue because, in a way, it automatically tells your audience who you are. A beggar is expected to wear torn clothes just as a billionaire is expected to wear the most expensive clothes.

Fashion Styles for Commercial Audition

For your commercial audition, your outfit should show how much you want the role. This is because your appearance is the first thing your casting director sees, even before you start your performance. It can leave a lasting impression on the mind of your director which can be a good or bad thing.

Here are some tips you should follow to ensure you get the best possible feedback for your clothes at your next commercial audition:

  • Dress casually: You aren't going to the audition to make a fashion statement. While you do have to look good, you don't need to wear a three-piece suit or your best dress. Also, you shouldn't dress nonchalantly by wearing your gym shorts. We recommend that you strike a balance between. Wear something that mildly relates to the role you're applying for. If you are applying for the role of a teacher, you can wear a T-shirt. This makes it easier for the casting director to picture you in that role.

  • Don't wear showy outfits: Wearing revealing clothes can give the wrong idea. It can also be seen as too distracting and affect your chances of landing the role.

  • Wear something you're comfortable in: Don't wear your lucky sock with holes in it if you know it will affect the way you walk. You should also not wear your itchy sweater no matter how cold it is— if you have an alternative. Rather, wear your most comfortable clothes. If they are new, or you haven't worn them in a while, it isn't a bad idea to wear them a day before just to see how well it fits and how comfortable you are in them.

Main tips choosing an audition outfit

Best Clothing Colors for Commercial Audition

Colors indeed add life to everything. Yet, if not properly matched, they could be disastrous.

  • You must avoid bright colors. This is because they steal the stage from you.

  • While you are the star of the show, avoid wearing clothes that reflect light, such as silver-colored jackets, because they are distracting.

  • You also should not wear all black — even if you're auditioning for the role of a gothic vampire whose favorite color is black. This is because the color (black) lacks excitement. If you must wear it, combine it with another color. But remember the rule, “don't wear black and brown together”.

Choosing the Right Shoes for Commercial Audition

It is often said that your shoes are the first thing people notice about you. Your footwear makes it easy to identify what you are doing at the moment. Going for a jog? You should be wearing running shoes. Going to work? You should be wearing loafers..

So, what shoes do you wear for your commercial audition?

Well, just like how specific shoes are for specific activities, there are also specific shoes for specific roles.

If you are auditioning for the role of a street dancer, you can slap on some sneakers. Accountant? Your normal work shoes should do the trick.

What color should you not wear to an audition

Although, you don't have to go all out for all roles. (For example, if you're auditioning for the role of a deep-sea diver, you don't have to wear flippers).

Your shoes can also be a good way to make yourself easy to identify.  An example of how this works is adding glitters to the toe cap part of your shoes. When sorting through applicants, the question, “Who was that with the sparkly shoes?” is very likely to pop up.

How to Choose Accessories for Commercial Audition?

Many times, an outfit will feel incomplete if there isn't an accessory or two to compliment it.  This can be your earrings, wristwatch, necklace, and even hats.

For your commercial audition, make sure your accessories don't just blend with your clothes. They also have to blend with the role you're auditioning for.

If you are playing the role of a president, your dollar sign chain won't do you much good, unlike if you were auditioning for the role of a rapper.

However, you must take a subtle approach when adding accessories so you don't end up taking the attention away from your performance.

Also, make sure you aren't trying to cover up something that may affect the commercial if you eventually land the role, such as wearing a baseball hat because of a bald spot.

How Do You Stand Out in a Commercial Audition?

While you don't want to overdo it, you also need to stand out with your outfit by making your mark on the stage.

So, how exactly do you do this?

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Wear neat and well-pressed clothes.
  • Blend your colors well but avoid a color riot.
  • Let your outfit match the role.
  • Add a tinge of extra (e.g. sparkly shoes, wristbands with glitter), etc.
  • Learn about the role and make sure you ace the performance.

By now, you've figured out that you don’t have to be a renowned fashion designer to look perfect for your next commercial audition.
