Casting calls in Alberta: Alberta's two casting markets are Calgary and Edmonton, and they operate separately. Calgary carries most of the film and television work. Productions come to Alberta for locations — the Rockies, foothills, badlands and prairie — which means a lot of exterior and period work.
Alberta is a location market, and understanding that explains almost everything about how casting works here. Productions come for the Rockies, the foothills, the badlands and the open prairie — landscapes that cannot be faked on a soundstage — and that shapes what they need from performers: a lot of exterior work, a lot of period and western casting, and background that can handle a full day outdoors in real weather.
Calgary in particular is one of the strongest-performing casting markets on allcasting, with a click-through rate well above the site average. That is a reasonable proxy for how little competition there is per role compared with Toronto or Los Angeles.
This guide covers the two Alberta markets, how pay works here, what the work actually involves, and how to spot a fake casting call.

Where the casting work is in Alberta
Calgary
The centre of Alberta's film and television industry, and the base productions work from when they shoot in the Rockies, Canmore, the foothills or the southern Alberta prairie. Calgary carries the larger share of scripted and background work in the province, and it is consistently among the best-performing casting markets on this platform.

Edmonton
A distinct market running on commercials, corporate and institutional video, documentary, and an independent film and theatre scene. Less scripted television than Calgary, but also fewer people chasing each role. Edmonton is roughly three hours from Calgary — not a commute for a pre-dawn call time, so pick the market you can actually reach. See casting calls in Edmonton and Edmonton extras work.
How casting pay works in Alberta
US rate tables do not apply in Canada. SAG-AFTRA minimums cover American productions. Work in Alberta falls under ACTRA agreements, and the figures are different. Any guide quoting you $231 per 8 hours for Canadian background work has reprinted the wrong country's contract.
- Read the rate in each individual notice. Canadian casting calls generally post it, and that figure is what applies to you.
- Union and non-union work both exist here. ACTRA covers performers on signatory productions; much commercial, corporate and independent work is not.
- Exterior work earns adjustments. On union productions, working wet, in smoke, in snow or in extreme conditions carries additional payment — which matters more in Alberta than almost anywhere, given what gets shot here.
- Payment arrives weeks after the shoot, from a payroll company rather than the production.
If you also work the US market, our guide to extras pay covers the SAG-AFTRA side in full so you can keep the two systems straight.

What kinds of roles get cast in Alberta?
Background and extras
The largest category. Productions shooting on Alberta locations frequently need background in volume, often outdoors and often in period or western wardrobe. No agent, no audition, no experience required. See open extras casting calls.
Period, western and specialty performers
This is Alberta's genuine advantage. Productions shooting here need people who can ride, handle livestock, drive a team, shoot period firearms safely, or simply look right in 1880s wardrobe. If you have any of those skills verifiably, you are competing against a very small field and specialty background pays above the general rate.
Commercials and corporate
Both cities run steady commercial, energy-sector and corporate video work, and Edmonton skews heavily this way. See commercial casting calls.
Modeling, music video and content creation
Regional brand campaigns and creator work run across both markets. See modeling, music video and content creator casting calls.

You need the right to work in Canada
Productions shoot in Alberta because the locations are here and because hiring locally is cheaper than importing performers. That is exactly why the market rewards local applicants — and why an Alberta production will choose an equally suitable local over the cost and paperwork of bringing someone across a border.
Be clear on your status before you apply: Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a valid work permit. If you are in the US and want streaming work, you will do better in the markets where those companies shoot domestically — see Amazon Prime casting calls and Netflix casting calls for where each one films.
How to spot a fake Alberta casting call
You never pay to register with a casting company or to audition. Legitimate casting companies are paid by productions, not by performers.
The Federal Trade Commission published a consumer alert on virtual casting call scams in December 2025, and the pattern crosses the border unchanged: an unexpected text from a supposed talent scout, a fast-turnaround "virtual audition" for a real title, then a sales pitch for photos or classes.
- Any request for money — registration, "processing", mandatory headshot packages, or classes bundled with a promised audition.
- Anyone offering to arrange a Canadian work permit for a fee. This one targets international applicants specifically.
- Unexpected texts or DMs naming a real production. Legitimate casting does not cold-text strangers.
- Impersonation of real casting directors through lookalike domains and new social accounts.
- Requests for banking details or identity documents before a signed booking with a named production.
- Guaranteed roles. Nobody can promise one.
Report suspected scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and verify any casting director's name against the casting office independently before replying.

How To
Treat Calgary and Edmonton as Two Separate Markets
Alberta casting splits cleanly in two and applying to both as though they were one city wastes your time. Calgary carries the larger share of film and television work, partly because of its proximity to the Rockies, the foothills and the prairie locations that productions come to Alberta for in the first place. Edmonton runs its own market in commercials, corporate and institutional video, documentary and a steady independent scene. They are three hours apart, which is not a commute for a pre-dawn call time. Work out which you can genuinely reach, build your profile around that city, and apply there consistently rather than spreading thin across both.
- 1List Every Specialty Skill You Genuinely HaveThis is the single highest-leverage thing you can do in Alberta specifically. Productions come here for locations that demand particular skills — riding, handling livestock, driving a team or a wagon, safe handling of period firearms, winter and mountain competence, even just being genuinely comfortable outdoors for twelve hours. Very few applicants have these and productions need them constantly. Specialty background also pays above the general rate on union productions.Pro Tip: Only list what you could demonstrate on a set tomorrow. Being caught out on a claimed skill in front of a wrangler ends the relationship with that casting office permanently.
- 2Build Your Profile Around One CityCalgary and Edmonton are three hours apart, which is not a commute for a call time before dawn. Decide which market you can genuinely reach, put that actual city in your profile rather than just “Alberta”, and apply there consistently. Add accurate height, weight and sizes, your playable age range, real availability, and current photos with your hair as it looks today.Pro Tip: Calgary carries more film and television work; Edmonton runs more commercial, corporate and documentary. Pick based on what you want to do as well as where you can get to.
- 3Read the Posted Rate, and Know What Exterior Work PaysCanadian work falls under ACTRA agreements rather than SAG-AFTRA, so US figures circulating online do not apply here. Canadian notices generally state the rate — read it before you accept. In Alberta specifically, pay attention to the adjustments: union productions owe additional payment for working wet, in smoke, in snow or in extreme conditions, and given what gets shot in this province those come up often.Pro Tip: Bring genuine cold-weather gear to any exterior booking, even in shoulder season. Nobody is impressed by someone who has to leave at hour four.
