KEY MATURE WOMAN The ruler of Nephistrom, a subject province of the empire, Lady Galistrad raised her son to be the perfect inheritor, perhaps someone who could challenge for the imperial throne. When he died in an obscure battle on behalf of the empire, Lady Galistrad lost much of her love for life.

KEY MATURE WOMAN Lady Bloodhoney is a powerful Herbsmith maven who, alongside her husband Yvas, created and raised an herbal being known as Cypress in a hidden place inside the Herbsmiths’ headquarters, trying to teach him kindness and wisdom; however, they have not been fully forthright with Cypress about his nature. She brings Elizabeth Baker into the Herbsmiths, and eventually inducts her into certain secrets of the Order.

KEY MATURE WOMAN Lady Galbaedra is the Herbsmiths’ foremost expert in spirits, both natural spirits and those who inhabit the earth. When Liz develops unpredictable supernatural powers, Lady Galbaedra is tasked with figuring out their exact dimensions. Lady Galbaedra’s affect is proper but kind; she is firm so that she is not sidelined for her peripheral area of expertise, but she is sympathetic to Liz’s situation and keenly interested in its mystical aspect.

KEY YOUNGER MAN A being made entirely from herbs, Cypress has the shape of a man but a soul that is half human and half something else entirely. He was created and raised by Lady Bloodhoney and her husband Yvas in secret as their child, but it becomes increasingly clear to him that there is something he hasn’t been told about his creation.

KEY YOUNGER MAN A scribe at Lady Aethrais Galistrad’s court, Irdil is a smooth but somewhat defensive and rancorous man who takes a romantic interest in Liz when she is assigned as Lady Galistrad’s court healer.

KEY YOUNGER MAN A rough warrior from the backwoods who presents himself to General Zarik of the imperial army in hopes of riches and glory. Prax’s surpassing prowess allows him to excel, but he and General Zarik have different visions of what the army’s ultimate fate should be.

KEY YOUNGER MAN The brilliant, volatile, and ambitious head of the Makers’ Guild, imperial architects and engineers. He has been newly elected to his role. Like Emperor Godaric, he is gay and was formerly the lover of Emperor Godaric when he was still crown prince. Terilu has now returned to Godaric’s life as the head of one of the Empire’s most powerful institutions.

KEY YOUNGER MAN A robber who works for Savrin, a prince of thieves in the capital. He is highly impulsive and takes a shine to Liz despite her clearly being in Savrin’s favor. He is too proud and vengeful to let her go easily.

KEY MATURE MAN The Emperor is a capable and tireless administrator, though many of his subjects complain bitterly that he is too merciful on wrongdoing, incompetence, and dissent. He spends his time judging cases and making sure the administration is functioning properly, rather than leading armies on the frontier like most of his predecessors.

KEY MATURE MAN A wild, fearsome, and slightly-mad aristocrat who is in command of the empire’s armies. He has his own set of values, which prize vitalism and smile pitilessly at mercy and moderation.

KEY MATURE MAN The director of education for initiates taken in by the Herbsmiths. Bald and austere; a plainspoken, no-nonsense kind of man.
