About the project: After years of growing up isolated in the Hearing world, a Deaf adult picks up sign language for the first time. Rate: Non-Union. Volunteer. Thanh is an Asian woman who is Deaf and uses hearing aids. Although she is Deaf, she was raised in a mainstream environment—attending regular schools with Hearing students—and has never been exposed to Deaf culture, the Deaf community, or had Deaf friends growing up. Navigating the Hearing world, she often feels like she doesn’t quite belong due to ongoing communication barriers.

Deaf community members who speaks sign language that Thanh meets on her journey—warm, grounded, expressive individuals who help her feel seen for the first time. Sign language skills required! POC Deaf actors are highly encouraged to apply (knowing Vietnamese Sign Language is a big plus!)

Thanh’s mother. A loving but traditional Asian parent shaped by cultural beliefs that view disability with stigma. She struggles to understand her daughter’s Deafness and sees sign language as a sign of weakness, not empowerment. Vietnamese speakers are highly encouraged to apply!

Deaf individuals who sign together to communicate. When stepping into a cafe, Thanh sees them being able to communicate so freely and without barriers even if a physical barrier is there (through the window). Through them, Thanh yearns for that community and belonging.
