Theatre Casting Call for "Steel Magnolias" Play

About the project: Truvy Jones runs a successful beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies in the neighborhood have a standing Saturday appointment. Along with her anxious and eager assistant, Annelle, Truvy styles the hair of many of the women about town: wealthy widow and former first lady of Chinquapin, Clairee Belcher, local curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux, intelligent and compassionate career woman M’Lynn, and her daughter Shelby, the prettiest girl in town. Shelby’s engagement is the talk of the town, but the joy and excitement of her wedding quickly turn to concern as she faces a risky pregnancy and a myriad of health complications.. As the women of Chinquapin make their ways over life’s many hurdles together, they find comfort (and a fair amount of verbal ribbing) in one another. RATED PG-13. Additional info: Actors will be asked to read from selected sides for their desired character. The sides are attached. Additionally, you may be asked to read for other roles or participate in scene work with fellow auditioners to assess chemistry and versatility. Callbacks will take place on Wednesday July 16. Mother of Shelby. She is overprotective at times and longs to be in control of events happening around her; she carries the weight of the world with her. Female presenting.
A very shy twenty-year-old hair-dresser. She goes from a very soft-spoken, naive person to a bible-loving Christian with her heart on her sleeve. Female presenting.
The prettiest girl in town, and loved by all. She has one of those strained relationships daughters have with their mother, and she often rebels just for the sake of it. A diagnosed diabetic. Female presenting. Mid 20s.
The widow of the former mayor of Chinquapin. She is wealthy and also knows everyone’s business. She is the sarcastic member of the group. She loves to laugh and poke fun at the little things that others cry over. She is very close with Ouiser. Female presenting.
She is a wealthy old bitty. She is a loveable, miserable lady. Her unique personality and sense of humor is a great relief in the serious scenes. She is very close to Clairee. Female presenting.
