"THE 39 STEPS" Presents as male. Romantic leading man with a sense of humor; suave, dashing, debonair — the classic Hitchcock hero. An everyman who discovers unknown reserves of will, determination, cunning, and vulnerability. Adept physical comedian, a great listener and responder, and ensemble member. RP English dialect required.

"MARIE AND ROSETTA" Presents as female. Skilled guitarist and singer with a bluesy voice that swings; also plays some piano. Pretty, vivacious, full-bodied, an irrepressible spirit. Looks for the joy in everything. A humorous disposition, full of mischief, but also a truly devout believer. An experienced traveling performer.
"MARIE AND ROSETTA" Character looks 17; is actually 23, presents as female. Skilled pianist and singer with a more traditional deep alto gospel voice; also plays a little guitar. Young, beautiful, radiant, on her way to becoming a star. A serious disposition. Deeply, genuinely faithful. New to the business. Naïve and eager. But more to her than meets the eye. Fearful of change but learns quickly.

"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as male. A singer, a “conjure man” or “rootworker,” somebody who practices folk magic and healing. A wise, existential man who believes that every person has a “song” they must not only identify within themselves but also make “harmonize” with the outside world. Gives off the impression of always being in control; nothing ever bothers him. Lost in a world of his own and unable to accept any adversity or interference with his grand design.
"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as male. Owner of the rooming house. Born of free African American parents in the North, he is set in his ways; never loses his composure and always runs a respectable house. Condemns other African Americans that do not follow this kind of lifestyle. He does whatever is necessary to stay afloat; including working night shifts and odd craftsman jobs he can pick up. He understands his world on a very literal level and doesn’t aspire to become more than he is.
"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as male. A peddler of goods like pots and pans, but his primary role is as a “People Finder,” claiming to be able to locate missing individuals for a fee. His ancestors brought Africans to America to be enslaved, and his father hunted enslaved people who had escaped. Despite appearing to be friendly, Selig’s actions are often suspect, hinting at a continued exploitation of Black people in the post-slavery era.
"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as male. A displaced man searching for his wife. He was forced to work for Joe Turner for seven years, which separated him from his wife and daughter. An odd man who dons an overcoat in mid-August, he has completely lost his way in life. Works as a deacon for the Abundant Life Church and at times is possessed by spiritual beings.
"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as male. Needs to be a proficient guitar player — a blues musician. Full of the vigor of youth. A suave young man without purpose, looking to make a quick buck as he travels the nation. Constantly seeking the attention of the women in his vicinity and trying to find the perfect young woman for himself. He smiles a lot.
"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as female. As Seth's wife of 25 years, she knows her place in the hierarchy of the boarding house yet still has some say in the decision making and will often voice her opinion. She does all the cooking and cleaning. A very loving mother to the boarding house family. She says that the only two things you need in your life are love and laughter.

She attempted to escape the racial persecution of the South but still finds it in the North. She does what it takes to ensure her self-preservation and remains a strong, self-sufficient woman.

Charming and leaves a lasting impression on everyone around her. Unwilling to let herself be told what to do by anyone anymore. Convinced that she will never return to the South and refuses to be associated with anything that her old life entailed.
"JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" Presents as female. A woman whose attractiveness is hidden under the weight and concerns of a dissatisfied life. Naïve and inexperienced, desperately searching for love and companionship. She believes that she needs a man to complete her identity. Weak and subservient, stuck in an enslaved mentality.
"ENGLISH" Presents as female. The teacher; was taught both American and British English; accent reflects this. Speaks English extremely well. Very positive attitude, friendly and encouraging; tries to think in English; torn between two cultures but hides it well.

When she finds out that he’s safe, she’s given a new lease on life and discovers a wilder, more carefree side of herself. Doubles as Crystal, Brenda, and various small ensemble roles.
"COME FROM AWAY" Hanna: American, presents as female. Contemporary Soprano with strong pop belt and mix up to E. The mother of a firefighter in Manhattan, Hannah waits for news about her son and is comforted by Beulah. Doubles as Margie, Mickey, Party Girl, and various small ensemble roles.

An eager new local TV reporter, Janice is thrown into the deep end on her first day. Initially naïve about the world, Janice must face the pain and confusion around her. Doubles as Flight Attendant, Britney, Party Girl, and various small ensemble roles.
"COME FROM AWAY" Beulah: Canadian, presents as female. The head of the Gander Legion, with a firefighter son, who walks Hannah to her church and prays with her. Doubles as Delores, Customs Officer, and various small ensemble roles.
"COME FROM AWAY" Bonnie: Canadian,presents as female. Mezzo, with belt up to B. A no-nonsense mother of three, Bonnie is the head of the Gander area SPCA. When she discovers animals are trapped on the planes, she stops at nothing to ensure their safety — but in frustration, she often lashes out at those around her. Doubles as Martha and various small ensemble roles.

The first female captain for American Airlines Pilot, Beverley Bass has always loved flying, when her world suddenly changes. Doubles as Annette: Canadian, 40s-60s, any race or ethnicity, presents as female. Strong Mezzo with an easy mixed or belted C#. A local teacher at the Gander Academy and mother to a lot of children and various small ensemble roles.
"COME FROM AWAY" Oz: Canadian, presents as male. Strong contemporary Tenor up to G. The quirky constable in the two-person Gander police force. When the town’s population suddenly doubles, Oz helps out in unexpected ways. Doubles as Joey, Customs Officer, Mr. Michaels, Terry, Matty, Rabbi, Head Cardiologist, and various small ensemble roles.

The head of an environmental energy company in Los Angeles, Kevin is on vacation with his boyfriend (and secretary, also named Kevin), when they are stranded in Gander. Inspired by the town’s generosity, Kevin creates the Pay It Forward Foundation. Doubles as Garth: Canadian, 30s-40s, any race or ethnicity, presents as male. Strong contemporary Tenor up to G.
"COME FROM AWAY" Kevin J: American, presents as male. Tenor or Baritone. Kevin T’s boyfriend and secretary. Sarcastic and unhappy, he wants to leave as soon as possible. Doubles as Ali, Dwight, and various small ensemble roles.
"COME FROM AWAY" Bob: New Yorker, global majority, presents as male. Baritone. A hardened New Yorker, Bob is suspicious of where he’s landed, fearing that it’s World War 3, that someone is going to shoot him and steal his wallet — but instead, he ends up losing his New York jadedness. Doubles as Muhumuza, Captain Bristol, and various small ensemble roles.
"COME FROM AWAY" Claude: Canadian, presents as male. Gruff, natural sounding Baritone with a strong high G. The gregarious and well-liked Mayor of Gander, Newfoundland, Claude loves his work, the townspeople, and his daily traditions, but he’s never had to deal with a crisis of this magnitude before. Doubles as Derm, Brenda’s Brother, Eddie, and various small ensemble roles.

An oil engineer who is focused on his work, Nick’s life is turned upside down when he falls for Diane. Doubles as Doug: Canadian, 30s-40s, any race or ethnicity, presents as male. Warm, natural Baritone or Baritenor with an easy E and strong pop sensibility. An Air Traffic Controller, married to Bonnie, who tries to help his wife and the animals.
