About the project: About the production: In this production of one of Shakespeare’s most timeless comedies, our protagonist, Viola, is shipwrecked and separated from her twin brother Sebastian in the land of Ilyria, a version of the American 1970s! There, she dresses as a young man and becomes close with Orsino, the Duke of Illyria. Orsino is in love with one of Ilyria’s most eligible bachelorettes, Olivia, and sends Viola (in disguise) to woo her for him. Olivia, however, falls in love with Viola dressed as a man. Sebastian arrives, causing a flood of mistaken identity, and marries Olivia. Viola then reveals her true identity and marries Orsino. The show’s themes of gender and identity will be brought to the forefront in this production. Rate: Directors will offer a stipend of at least $100 to each actor cast. (Seeking u/s only) Viola is a passionate, witty, and resilient woman. She is shipwrecked on the island of Illyria and immediately disguises herself as a man, Cesario, to work for Orsino. Through the course of the story, we see her deal with blows as they come, and perhaps, by the end, she learns something about her own identity. Female/Female-presenting
Orsino is Illyria's handsome Duke, but he spends more time brooding than governing. He is obsessed with the idea of Olivia but finds himself falling in love with Viola dressed as Cesario instead. Male/Male-presenting
Olivia is one of Illyria's most popular young women. Smart, passionate, witty, and when she falls for Cesario, she falls hard. Female/Female-presenting
Viola's twin brother. He is shipwrecked and separated from his sister and arrives in Illyria midway through the play. Every character he meets thinks he is Cesario, and he ends up marrying Olivia, who thinks he is Cesario. Male/Male-presenting
Antonio is a sailor who rescues Sebastian from the shipwreck and has since fallen in love with him. This love leads him to ignore his ban from Ilyria and follow Sebastian. Male/Male-presenting
A musician and comedian who hangs around Olivia's, and sometimes Orsino's estates. They are this play's fool character. Composer/Musician desired for this role.
Self-important, snobbish, arrogant, and a bit of a killjoy, Malvolio serves as a sort of protector for Olivia. After admonishing Toby, and his friend Andrew, Malvolio is tricked into thinking Olivia loves. them in one of the show's funniest scenes.
Olivia's often drunk, never-serious cousin. He has an ongoing flirtation with Maria throughout the show and is an expert prankster. Male Male-presenting
Olivia's friend and confidant, she hangs out a great deal with Toby and Andrew and is a fan of a good time. Female Female-presenting
Toby's often-dancing, often-drunk, often-quippy yet somewhat sad friend, who Toby is desperate to pair up with Olivia, despite Andrew's disinterest in this idea. Possibly queer. Male/Male-presenting
An ex-member of Olivia's circle, who is trying to get back into her good graces. Heavily involved in Toby's pranks.
