Seeking Talents for 'Xanadu'
Slap on your roller skates, pump up the glitter, and get hip to the muses in Xanadu, the laugh-out-loud musical stage adaptation of the 1980 film. Xanadu follows Clio, the lovely and precocious Greek muse who decides to put on some rollerskates. legwarmers, and an Australian accent in order to help Sonny Malone, a chalk artist with half a brain and a heart of gold, rediscover his own creativity. With both help and hindrance from the other muses -- and from a clarinetist-turned-real estate mogul named Danny Maguire -- Sonny and Clio work to rebuild their “apex of the arts”: a roller disco. Xanadu is the rare musical with a big heart, an even bigger funny bone, and a tongue stuck firmly in its cheek.
3 roles
Sonny is a hunky but temporarily uninspired California chalk artist. Sonny, at his best, is optimistic, hard-working, and determined, if not always the sharpest tool in the shed. The actor playing Sonny should have a strong pop tenor with a high C. He should also have some physical adeptness in rollerskates, as he performs a few scenes on skates.
Clio is the Greek muse of history, the youngest of the nine muses, and their de facto leader. Clio loves inspiring artists, but it struck when she discovers how much she loves to create art herself. She falls in love with the human chalk artist Sonny Malone. The actor playing Clio should be an exceptionally strong comic performer with a large singing range and a high pop belt. She should also be incredibly proficient on roller skates.
At first glance, Danny Maguire is a hard-ass real estate manager with no time for shenanigans. He is more interested in making money than he is in fostering new businesses or providing opportunities to young people like Sonny Malone, who wants to rent one of his real estate holdings, the decrepit Xanadu theatre. The actor playing Danny also plays Zeus, the hard-nosed, powerful king of the gods. The actor playing Danny/Zeus should be an excellent comic actor with a great deadpan.
