6 roles
(male presenting) - A quiet, intellectual middle-aged man who lives in Bucks County with his adopted sister, Sonia. Nostalgic and wistful, he longs for the simplicity of the past and struggles with the rapid changes of modern life. Though he often acts as the voice of reason, he harbors deep frustration over his stagnant existence, which erupts in a passionate monologue about the loss of shared cultural experiences.
(female presenting) - Vanya’s adopted sister, who has spent years caring for their elderly parents and now feels trapped in a life of loneliness and regret. Prone to dramatic mood swings and self-pity, she envies her sister, Masha’s success but lacks the confidence to change her own life. However, a costume party and an unexpected romantic interest spark a glimmer of hope for her future.
(female presenting) - A glamorous yet insecure actress who has been financially supporting her siblings, Vanya and Sonia, while resenting the responsibility. Self-absorbed and attention-seeking, she clings to her fading youth, flaunting her much-younger boyfriend, Spike. Beneath her vanity and bossiness, she struggles with the fear of becoming irrelevant, making her both frustrating and deeply human.
(male presenting) - Masha’s handsome, much-younger boyfriend—an aspiring actor full of youthful energy, charm, and self-absorption. Frequently shirtless and obliviously flirtatious, he embodies the shallow, fast-moving world that clashes with Vanya’s nostalgia. Though not particularly bright, his carefree attitude highlights the generational divide among the characters.
(female presenting) - A sweet, earnest, and starry-eyed young woman who idolizes Masha and dreams of becoming an actress. Visiting her aunt and uncle from next door, she is innocent and full of enthusiasm, making her a refreshing contrast to the jaded older characters. Though naive, she has a genuine kindness and sensitivity, forming a special bond with Vanya and inspiring his creativity.
Vanya and Sonia’s eccentric, prophecy-spewing housekeeper with a penchant for dramatic warnings and mystical visions. She often delivers cryptic yet oddly insightful predictions, sometimes in the style of a Greek oracle. Though dismissed as odd, her instincts often prove eerily accurate, adding a touch of magical absurdity to the play.
