Casting Call for Stage Play "Much Ado About Nothing"
Auditions for play "Much Ado About Nothing". Looking for actors. Please see the breakdown below. About the project: "Beatrice and Benedick are bitter exes who can’t stand each other. Hero and Claudia find love at first sight. Pedro Prince just wants to play cupid. And the vengeful John is bent on ruining everyone else’s lives just because he can. Will the villain get his way, or – even in this day and age – does love really conquer all? Set in today’s America – where battles tend to be fought in the courtroom – with updated characters and incorporating modern music and technology, the Rudes present a contemporary spin on one of Shakespeare’s greatest and most beloved comedies." Rate: This is an all-volunteer organization. Additional info: Auditions will consist of readings from the script. You may prepare a one to two minute monologue if you wish. The sides are attached. Rehearsals will be a maximum of 3 weeknights per week between Mon – Thurs. Performance dates: May 9th – 17th. If you are interested, please apply.
18 roles
(Male/masculine-presenting) - managing partner of his late father's law firm, the position having just been made official following a protracted legal battle with his half-brother, John, over their inheritance, which included ownership of the building said firm is housed in. Considers himself a progressive and a romantic, but still finds himself at times falling into the mindset drummed into him by his upbringing, as his father was a misogynist who only started letting women join the firm.
(Female/feminine-presenting) - junior partner in Pedro's firm. She's one of the few female attorneys currently in the firm (and the only out lesbian, though she only came out once management changed), and the first to be promoted above associate - which happened after she came up with the strategy that helped Pedro defeat his half-brother's claim to the estate. May lean somewhat masculine in clothing choices, etc.
(Male/masculine-presenting) - senior associate in Pedro's firm. Has been friends with Pedro since the latter was an associate himself & he was an intern. Has no real ambition to move higher and is content being one of Pedro's most trusted confidantes; he's also taken Claudia under his proverbial wing at Pedro's urging. Dated Beatrice while they were both in law school, but fell out with her before graduation over his choice to take Prince Senior's job offer & has sworn off romance ever since.
(Female/feminine-presenting) - Legal Aid attorney working out of the Law Library (and occasionally her uncle's chambers). Staying with said uncle while working to pay off her student loans (which he helps with where he can). Ex-lover of Benedick. Finds the idea of corporate law distasteful at best (part of what split her and Benedick up), and decided to use her knowledge/skills to help those who needed it even if it didn't make her a lot of money.
(Female/feminine-presenting) - college student. Beatrice's cousin and Leonato's daughter. Not quite sure what she wants to do with her life yet and is mostly just enjoying the college experience. Came out as bi/pansexual when she was a freshman; both her cousin and her father were incredibly supportive. Has a romantic streak and is waiting to meet 'the one.' Her idealism often clashes with Beatrice's cynicism, though they do at least (mostly) agree on matters of feminism/female empowerment.
(Male/masculine-presenting) - District Court Judge. Fully supports his daughter's sexuality (sometimes to the point of overdoing it) and fell out with Pedro's father - who'd once been a close friend - when the latter made some disparaging remarks about it. He did maintain a sort of fatherly relationship with Pedro, in hopes of steering him in a better direction.
(Masculine-leaning) - Recent law school graduate working as Leonato's clerk. Close friend of Hero's. They met through the university's GSA and he/they has been a sort of mentor to her ever since. Refuses to put a label on him/themself, but fully supports his/their friends' choices in that regard. (doubles as Watch).
(Female/feminine-presenting) - law student working as Leonato's intern. Is 'friends' with Hero (mostly to keep in Leonato's good graces), but is more of a frenemy. (doubles as Seacoal).
(Male/masculine-presenting) - Leonato's older brother, as well as his closest confidante. Living with his brother for health reasons. (Doubles as Verges).
Pedro's personal assistant. Also has a side gig as a singer (weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc.) (doubles as Conrade). Auditioners should prepare to sing 16 bars of a song of their choosing. Ability to play guitar a plus.
(Male/masculine-presenting) - Pedro's half-brother. Not a lawyer (owns/operates a PR firm that specializes in making problems go away, a la 'Scandal'), but wanted the building housing his father's firm - among other assets - because he felt he was owed something for the years of neglect from said father. Only 'reconciled' when it was clear that he'd likely bankrupt himself continuing to fight (especially once the strategy Claudia came up with was put into use).
(Male/masculine-presenting) - John's personal attorney who also does work for John's firm. Possibly in love with John on some level. (Doubles as Balthasar).
(Male/masculine-presenting) - John's 'fixer.' Specializes in doing the dirty work, both for John personally and for John's clients. Works as an 'independent' contractor to keep any potential blowback from his 'jobs' from falling back on John.
Works for a private security firm that Pedro hired for protection after receiving some 'anonymous' threats following the conclusion of the dispute with John. Was placed in charge of the team for this particular job and has let the promotion go to his head.
(Male/masculine-presenting) - was supposed to have been in charge but was shunted aside for Dogberry following some troubling mental lapses (possible early dementia?). The firm won't outright fire him unless he does something to warrant it, but they no longer consider him fit to run operations and have him working as the second to one of their younger officers - Dogberry, in this case - instead. (doubles as Antonio).
Building security that were 'recruited' by Dogberry for this particular job. (double as Arturo/Margaret).
Local pastor for an affirming church and longtime friend of Leonato's. (doubles as Sexton)
Court stenographer. Related to Seacoal in some way (details dependent on age/gender of actor). (doubles as Reverand) .
