A younger sibling, in his early 30s. He is pretty reserved, alienated, and doesn’t communicate easily. He is longing to find a kindred spirit but fails to find one – a genuine loner. When the war started, he joined the Russian forces/collaborators but soon left them having seen what they were doing to his community. Tolik claims he’s at war with everybody, and both sides are looking for him. He lost everything except his home.
An elder sibling. Left the house when he was young to start his own business. He comes rarely to see his family who are quite needy. Anton’s business is everything to him, he is extremely success-oriented. He doesn’t seem to have any stable principles; his philosophy is to “iron everything out”.
She is a former school teacher and a keeper of the whole community. She is a mysterious figure – a conductor of rituals. Usually, the only person optimistic for the future, she doesn’t see much hope for the present. Aunt Shura hates no one, she understands different people.
A wealthy stout farmer, a neighbour of the Shevtsov family. His character is quite slimy and double-dealing. The war destroyed his wealth, that’s why Kolya is ready to attack (in all senses) everyone. Kolya supported the Russian forces/collaborators, but claims he is just a “small man doing what he was told to.”
Kolya’s wife. A conformist and a nice person who does nothing when it is time to raise voice against wrongs. She suffers a lot from people fighting and being unable to understand each other. She is pregnant and needs to go to the hospital. Mashka is scared to bring the child into this world.
A local mailman. He is sharp, spiky, and ready to do anything to achieve his goals; always gets at the core of things. An ideological collaborator and diversionist. His post office was burned down; he lost his world as well. Rinat doesn’t believe things can be rebuilt and restored and doesn’t see a place for him in their town anymore.
Aunt Shura’s assistants from the town’s dorm for the deaf. They are dressed in black and help Aunt Shura conduct rituals. The girls pretend to be deaf and mute but they can talk and hear things. Nothing is sure in this world that balances on the edge.
