Auditions for "Silent Sky" play. Casting actors. Please see the breakdown below. About the project: Henrietta Leavitt works at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, where she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. She is part of a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who has no time for the women’s probing theories. Silent Sky, the true story of this 19th-century astronomer, explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries – when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Additional info: Sides from the script are available to download: see attachments. There may be additional cold readings from the script. A show calendar will be available at auditions. Ensure you list any schedule conflicts on your audition form. You may complete the audition form prior to attending: see attachments. Copies will be available onsite. Headshots and resumes are welcome but not required. The character of Margaret will need to do a music audition including playing the piano/singing with a short music piece from the show. Piano and sheet music will be provided at auditions. The character of Williamina will need to have a Scottish accent, so all auditioning need to try their best at this. They will have a Scottish dialect coach. Performance dates: March 28-30, April 2-6, 9-12. If you are interested, please apply.

Raised in Wisconsin and the daughter of a minister. She was hired as a Harvard College Observatory “computer” to map the stars. Henrietta is a non-traditional early 1900s woman. She aspires to work as an astronomer. She is passionate about her work and feels compelled to find answers to her questions about the universe. She is brilliant, meticulous, excited. She wears a period hearing aid.

Margaret LeavittFemale25-35 y.o.All ethnicities

Henrietta’s younger sister, homebody, sweet, creative and plays piano and sings throughout the show. She is a gifted musician. She stays at home and is a traditional early 1900s woman. She marries and has a child. She is concerned about Henrietta’s ambition, as it goes against the traditional norms for women of the time; however, she is supportive of her sister and celebrates her accomplishments.

Peter ShawMale25-35 y.o.All ethnicities

The head astronomer’s apprentice and supervisor of the women at Harvard Observatory. In contrast to Henrietta, he is not passionate about astronomy, although he enjoys the work. It is just a job to him. He wanted to be an actor. Peter falls in love with Henrietta.

Annie CannonFemale40-59 y.o.All ethnicities

Henrietta’s co-worker who has made important scientific discoveries of her own. She is a suffragette. A strong-willed leader of the group of women, terse, sure of herself; a firebrand.

Williamina FlemingFemale50-56 y.o.All ethnicities

(50s+) Scottish and smart as a whip! A former housekeeper for Dr. Pickering who is head of the Harvard College Observatory. She was hired because Dr. Pickering felt she would do better than the men he had working for him. She is very quick-witted. Must have a Scottish accent.
