A young man accused of murder. Seemingly naive and confused.
A distinguished Queen’s Counsel barrister. Experienced and successful in the courtroom. English old school with typical prejudices. Snobbish but likes a challenge as a defense counsel.
Successful solicitor, frequent collaborator with Sir Wilfred. Looks for the good in people.
Office typist for Sir Wilfred. Has a sense of humour not always appreciated in Chambers.
Officious Chief Clerk for Sir Wilfred. A bit pompous.
Officious but capable and efficient policeman. Defers to his betters.
Older European wife of Leonard Vole. In a marriage of convenience – or is she genuinely in love with him? Will do what she thinks is necessary to help Leonard. Hard to pin down.
Solicitor, Queen’s Counsel, prosecutor. Determined to prove Vole’s guilt. Doesn’t much like Sir Wilfred.
Doctor in the service of the police. Knowledgeable and capable.
Older unmarried housekeeper for Emily French. Stern, judgmental Scot. Doesn’t like Vole.
Assistant in the police forensic laboratory.
Officious, in charge of the courtroom. Knows his job and does it well.
Calls the witnesses and administers oaths.
Judge trying the case. Respected and thorough. Firmly in control of the proceedings.
Responsible for the accused in the courtroom.
Leonard’s love. Young and possessive of Leonard. She’s staked her claim.
