The setting is Monte Cristo Cottage, the seaside home of the Tyrones in Connecticut. The four main characters are the semi-autobiographical representations of O’Neill, his older brother, and their parents. The play portrays a family struggling to grapple with the realities and consequences of each member’s failings. The parents and two sons blame and resent each other for various reasons; bitterness and jealousy serve as proxies for ultimately failed attempts at tenderness and compassion. The family’s enduring emotional and psychological stress is fueled by their shared self-analysis, combined with articulate honesty. The story deals with addiction, unfulfilled dreams, moral flaws, and the struggle of family relationships. Rate: Non-paid roles. Additional info: This play is heavy and concerns addiction. Please only audition if you can cope with those kinds of issues and it won’t negatively impact your mental health. They will have an intimacy director and a therapist on call if needed, but your mental health matters more than a role, so please audition at your own discretion. Rehearsal Details: First Read-through, depending on the actor’s schedules, will be in December, soon after the audition dates. Directors will then get together two or three more times before Thursday January 2 2025 when regular rehearsals will be Monday through Thursday, January 2 through Wednesday, February 12, from 7:00-9:30 pm. No rehearsal from December 20 – 25 or on either New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Performance Details: ALL actors and technicians must be at all Tech Week rehearsals. Tech Week is Monday-Wednesday February 10-12. Performances are Thursday Sunday February 13-16 & Thursday-Sunday February 20-23. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 pm. His wife, a bit of dreamer, a bit of a victim, a bit of a momma bear. She struggles with addiction and has a slight Irish lilt. Please be willing to do accent work if you are auditioning for this part. Some stage combat will be required but less than all the men. Please note: this part has a lot of lines. She’s their maid and she has the least lines but still is a juicy and fun part. She has a slight Irish accent so accent work will be required for this role.
Directors will be casting 2 understudies for this show to understudy Mary and James Sr. Understudies will have at least TWO guaranteed performances on Thursdays. Understudies ARE expected to learn the roles and the male understudy might also be asked to understudy Jamie and Edmond if reasonable. On your audition forms, please note if you are NOT able to understudy.
