5 roles
(Lead) A recently blind woman, Susan is resourceful, intelligent, and determined. She starts off vulnerable but quickly becomes the formidable opponent of the men who underestimate her. Her emotional journey and transformation are at the heart of the play.
(Lead) A master manipulator and sociopath, Roat is the mastermind behind the plot to terrorize Susan. He is cold, calculating, and takes pleasure in psychological warfare. The role requires a commanding presence and the ability to balance charm with menace. Similarly, the role requires a master of disguise, with the ability to shift between different characterizations as his con unfolds.
(Supporting) A con man with a conflicted conscience, Mike poses as Susan’s ally but is ultimately in it for himself. Over the course of the play, he begins to question his role in the plan. This role requires nuanced vulnerability beneath a hardened exterior.
(Supporting) A bumbling, small-time crook, Carlino is Roat’s reluctant accomplice. He lacks the intelligence and finesse of the others, often providing comic relief amidst the tension. This role requires solid comedic timing while still maintaining a sense of threat.
(Supporting) Susan’s husband, Sam is practical and caring but leaves her to navigate the situation on her own for much of the play. Though a minor character, his relationship with Susan provides important emotional stakes for the story.
