He thinks that she is dead. Everyone thinks that she is her brother. Everyone thinks that her brother is her. Shenanigans ensue. Viola, separated from her twin Sebastian, dresses as a boy and works for the Duke Orsino, whom she falls in love with. Orsino is in love with the Countess Olivia, and sends Viola to court her for him, but Olivia falls for Viola instead. Sebastian arrives, causing a flood of mistaken identity, and marries Olivia. Viola then reveals she is a girl and marries Orsino. Intro – The Lord of Misrule was the naughty spirit behind the Twelfth Night revelries in Queen Elizabeth I’s court. Under his mischievous influence, the normal order of things got turned upside down: bosses became servants, servants became bosses, women dressed as men, men dressed as women, dogs and cats living together (wait, no, that’s Ghost Busters); role playing, mask-wearing, and heavy drinking were all encouraged at the Festival of Twelfth Night. Huzzah! Additional info: What to prepare: Any comedic monologue or song. Something you are comfortable with. If you do not have a monologue, something to perform will be provided to you. *Sword fighting skills a plus for Sir Toby, Antonio, Captain, and First Officer. Female presenting. Her name means “will” or “purpose” – she is clever but moody and falls for the Duke in about ten seconds while dressed as a page named Cesario. Yeah. Hilarity ensues.
Male presenting. Named in tribute to Queen Lizzie’s guest of honor at her Twelfth Night party. Emo rock star type. He thinks he loves Olivia – or, you know, himself. But that new page is looking pretty nice, too…
Female presenting. Lovely lady of a wealthy noble house, her name is an anagram of Viola’s, thus “purpose” becomes “whatever, dudes”. Not really into being sold off to suitors. But that new page of the Duke’s is looking pretty nice…
Male presenting. Twin to Viola, supposedly dead in a shipwreck but actually partying in town for most of the play. Possibly with Bill and Ted, that sort. Cool dude.
Male OR female presenting. Their name means “ill will”, the reverse of Viola and Olivia. In “love” with Olivia but mostly with the idea of ruling the house, the sort you really want to prank.
Olivia’s father hired them as the court fool (think very smart jester), but they spent years as Olivia’s best friend and teacher. Loves parties, pranks, and poetry.
Male presenting. Olivia’s uncle who once was an accomplished knight, loves the drink. Smart and smelly. Strong physical role.
Male presenting. His name means “sick face”. Not the smartest of the lot, possibly inbred but a good soul, suitor to Olivia whether she knows it or not. Hangs out with Sir Toby and Maria. Giggles a lot.
Female presenting. The brains of the lot. Loves them all (with a soft spot for Toby) and loves the game. She’s probably the only one of the pranksters who can write. Hates Malvolio. Strong physical role.
