About the project: "In the steamy Mississippi delta of the 1950s, a wealthy family’s lust, greed, jealousy, and lies are exposed during the 65th birthday party for the patriarch, Big Daddy Pollitt. Can favored son Brick and his alluring wife Maggie “the Cat” resurrect their passion in order to give Big Daddy the one gift he desires most?" Additional info: NOTE: Actors will be given sides based on roles they are auditioning for. Sides will be made available at auditions. NOTE: Actors must be able to do a Southern accent. NOTE: The actor cast as Brick must be comfortable performing bare-chested for a portion of Act I. NOTE: Due to the sexual undertones of the story, an intimacy director will be provided for scenes between actors cast as Maggie and Brick. NOTE: There is one instance of a racial epithet in the script. Actor who is cast as Big Daddy should be aware. A disclaimer will appear in the program to alert audiences. NOTE: Some actors may need to consume a piece of birthday cake in Act II. You will be asked to list any food allergies on the audition form you fill out. NOTE: ACTORS CAST MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL PERFORMANCE DATES AND ENTIRE TECH WEEK (January 12-16.) Rehearsals will be 2-3 times a week, and pending cast availability may take place on Sunday evenings. Actors cast as Brick, Maggie, Big Daddy, and Big Mama should expect to be at the majority of the rehearsals. Supporting roles will likely only attend one rehearsal a week in the beginning. A beautiful, passionate woman whose vibrant attractiveness has raised her from poverty to the wife of the son of a rich businessman. Her husband has physically and emotionally withdrawn from her, and she is desperate to renew their sexual relationship. She is willing to lie to remain his wife.
The favored son of a plantation owner, he is slipping into alcoholic oblivion after the death of his soulmate/friend. Despite his “weakness” he is a truth teller fighting the many lies his family is built on.
A force of nature – a vulgar, selfish, brash millionaire. He openly favors Brick. Despite physical issues he’s been given a clean bill of health by his doctor and feels empowered to grab the passion and joy that’s been absent from his life. Married to a woman he despises to elevate him in society.
Married to Big Daddy. She is silly, crude, and lives a life of pretense that her husband loves her despite his ill treatment of her. She, too, favors Brick over his brother. She has let herself go physically and has surrendered her dignity to maintain peace in the lie that is her marriage.
Brick’s older, lawyer brother. He deeply resents Brick’s status as the “favored son.” He has taken satisfaction in Big Daddy’s declining health and deliberately schemes to take over Big Daddy’s estate.
Gooper’s wife. Mother of 5 children with one on the way. From a once rich family that helped make Gooper successful, she holds that over his head. Very jealous of Maggie’s beauty and Big Daddy’s doting on her. She goes to great, embarrassing lengths to appear the loving daughter-in-law while all the while viciously conspiring with Gooper to ensure they inherit the estate.
A tactless, opportunistic, hypocritical guest at Big Daddy’s birthday party. A small-town preacher who enjoys the high life as long as someone else pays for it.
Big Daddy’s doctor. Tired from too long in his profession and averse to giving bad news.
A servant.
The housekeeper.
A maid. The servants appear throughout the play. They are watchful and aware of the tensions in the family.
