Musical Audition For "Sweeney Todd" Production
"Sweeney Todd" show in need of cast. Please see the breakdown below. About the project: "The show is set in 1846. A wrongly accused Sweeney Todd steps off the boat from Australia with a young sail, Anthony Hope, who saved his life. As they make their way off the boat Todd describes his plight of his wife and daughter before parting ways with Anthony to go find them. When he arrives home, he is greeted to a rather odd woman named Mrs. Lovett running a failing pie shop below his old apartment. Upon seeing him, Mrs. Lovett recognizes him and tells him of his wife's death. The two then begin to collude on how to kill the man responsible, Judge Turpin. The Judge is also the one holding his daughter, Johanna, hostage as he took her as his ward after Sweeney's arrest. While those plans are being laid, Anthony meets Johanna by happenstance while wandering through town and they fall in love instantly. He then seeks Sweeney for help to rescue her not knowing that Johanna is his aforementioned daughter. When Sweeney realizes what is going on, he seizes the opportunity to not only free his daughter, but get his revenge on Judge Turpin." Additional info: Looking for 9 named actors with an ensemble of 10 or more. Understudies will be picked from the ensemble. Audition Days: For auditions, come prepared with a monologue of 30 - 60 seconds and 32 bars to sing. There will be no accompaniment, so be prepared to sing acapella. Wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to dance. Callback Day: June 15th 10am - 12am Be prepared to read the script and do more singing and dancing as needed. Bass-Baritone or Baritone in range. Cool, collected, calculating until he is ready to snap. He is a man who is constantly brooding and constantly thinking of how to get his revenge. He does occasionally let his temper take hold of him, but all that truly matters to him is his revenge and his daughter Johanna.
Mezzo-soprano or contralto. Quirky, manipulative, self-centered, talkative, and maternal. She is Sweeney's voice of reason and keeps his head level when he wants to act rashly. She has also fallen in love with him and of a life with just the two of them.
Around 18, Baritone/Tenor. Earnest, naive, foolish. Anthony lives by his heart which gets him taken advantage of. He hates confrontation but will fight if it means that Johanna can be free.
Around 18, Soprano. Innocent, naive, spirited. She is very sheltered and is trapped under Judge Turpin's roof. She doesn't understand what is outside, but she desires to be free.
Bass or Bass-Baritone. A public figure who uses his power with no remorse or compassion. Besides power, the only other thing he wants is his ward Johanna as she grows into womanhood.
Tenor. A simple-minded young man. He works under Pirelli and doesn't know much about life except that if he doesn't do what he is told, he will be beaten. He believes it is better to serve a vengeful master than be hungry on the streets.
Tenor/Countertenor. The Judge's right-hand man. He enjoys all the benefits that come from his position and how he gets Turpin's power by extension. He is incredibly pompous and condescending.
Mezzo-Soprano. Sweeney's wife who has lost her mind after a failed overdose attempt and watching her husband be pulled away from her. She lives on the streets begging for food, coins, and prostituting herself. She is deranged, schizophrenic, wild, and unpredictable.
Tenor (Lots of flair). A conman posing as a flamboyant Italian street barber. Cruel and cunning, he recognizes Sweeney and tries to blackmail him before becoming the first victim of his razor.
Directors want an array of voices.
