Description:

Actors needed for "A Christmas Story" Show. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: Based on the perennial holiday movie favorite, and from the Songwriting team behind the smash-Broadway hit, DEAR EVAN HANSEN, and the film LA LA LAND, we bring you the hilarious musical, A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL. This now-classic story follows bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder® Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle (“You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”). An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. Additional info: See the details attached. Callbacks will be the evening of September 11 by invitation. Audition Preparation -Auditions will be held at Cedar Ridge Elementary in Hyde Park. Please park in the south main parking lot and enter through the main entrance. -Please arrive 10 minutes before your assigned audition time. -Bring with you a complete audition form, a conflict list for dates from October September 10-December 13, along with a current picture. Nothing fancy required just make sure it looks like you. – Performers will be asked to sing one minute of a Broadway/musical theatre song in the style of A Christmas Story-the musical. We highly encourage performers to select a song that not only shows off your vocal ability but also shows character and personality. Upbeat songs are highly encouraged. -An accompanist, a Bluetooth speaker and AUX cord will be available for music. Please bring your own “dongle” if you need to attach it to the speaker. You are welcome to bring your own accompanist if you’d prefer. -Performers should choose one of the acting sides provided. This is an opportunity to show your acting ability and character. You may choose a piece from any character regardless of age or gender. -The auditions and callbacks are closed to observers so only those auditioning will be allowed into the audition rooms. The exception would be bringing your own accompanist. The adult cast members must look like they could believably be parents or grandparents to elementary aged children. If interested, please apply.

6 roles

The Old ManMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

THE FAMILY (stage age late 30's to early 50’s / vocal range = B♭2 to G4) Gruff and grumbling on the exterior, Ralphie's Dad has a good heart. He doesn't overtly show it, but he 100% loves his family. A blue- collar guy, he usually expects the worst out of most situations; but is transformed into a true "song and dance" man in his moments of fantasy. The actor playing this character must be a strong singer and mover who isn't afraid to go "over the top" for comedic purposes.

MotherMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

THE FAMILY (stage age: mid 30's to 40’s / vocal range = G3 to D♭5) She is the secret engine that runs the family, keeping the household together with a smile--despite bickering children, limited funds, an x- rated lamp in the living room window, a cranky furnace and a crankier husband. The actor who plays this role must be very comfortable with children.

Jean Shepherd/NarratorMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

FEATURED ADULTS Jean Shepherd is the author of the books that the story is based on, as well as the actual narrator voice we hear in the 1983 movie. On stage, he is a warm, charismatic and engaging storyteller; omniscient but not overpowering. This actor must be very comfortable with audiences, and must be able to "read the crowd" and tell the story at the same time. Note: This actor sings one line at the end of the show, and does not dance.

Miss ShieldsFemale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

FEATURED ADULTS (stage age 30's to 50s / vocal range = F#3 to D5) Ralphie's 5th grade teacher, a seemingly stereotypical 1940s educator--prim and proper, stern when necessary--though warm and even humorous when the situation merits it. In Ralphie's fantasy, she transforms into a dynamic, brassy, show-stopping lounge singer and tap dancer! The person playing this role must be an excellent belter, an experienced tap dancer and an actor who can handle comedy AND children!

SantaMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

FEATURED ADULTS (stage age: 30's to 60’s / vocal range is B♭2 to F4) The Santa Claus at Higbee's Department Store is ill- tempered, slightly inebriated and very unhappy with his job--nothing like the "Jolly Old St. Nick” one would dream of meeting! He gets rid of each kid as fast as he can and judges them on their way down. The actor playing this role must be a strong comedic actor and singer, and must be comfortable with children. He may be part of the adult male ensemble.

ENSEMBLEBoth genders18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

The Adult Ensemble will consist of a mix of strong singers and dancers (stage ages 20's to 60’s), who will play a variety of smaller roles in scenes, as well as performing in larger production numbers. Dancers are needed as well as performers who can hold tight jazz vocal harmonies. Flexible team players who are comfortable working with children are eagerly sought for this production!
