About the project: The Diary of Anne Frank premiered on Broadway in 1955, only 10 years after Anne Frank’s death and eight years after the publication of her diary documenting two and a half years spent in hiding from Nazi persecution. In a world turned upside down by the Holocaust, Anne Frank held on to her faith in humanity. This story of resilience, optimism and a young girl’s extraordinary spirit transcends time and offers hope to today’s world. Winner of the Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize and the Critic’s Circle Award. Additional info: Auditions will be cold readings from the script. In reference to our audition notices: Most characters directors encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns, and you will see that in the descriptions they provide. However limiting the descriptions are, the casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible, and directors invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to apply for the roles they most identify with. They will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. It is the policy of Theatre that all auditions are open to the public. (Must be able to play 17 years old), pretty, quiet, obedient, demure, frail, friendly, very intelligent, overwhelmed by the trials of hiding, very close to her mother and father. Like Anne, she longed for a friend in whom she could confide. She played the role of peacemaker when Anne overstepped. She was a good girl and was admired by all.
Father of Anne and Margot, a wise fair, loyal, attentive, patient, intelligent, level-headed, optimistic, genuinely liked people, devoted to his wife, Edith.
(must play mid 40’s) A lovely woman, from a wealthy German family, reticent, loving, moral, concerned, gracious, cultured, devoted to tradition, devastated by her relationship with Anne, is barley holding on based on the issues of isolation and hiding.
(Actress must be able to play in her mid-40s) loud, egotistical, talky, often crude, suspicious, bossy, moody, self-important, overbearing, critical of others, flirtatious, manipulative, does not like to be bossed around, tries to run the household.
Dour, selfish, complaining, ungrateful, dictatorial, highly critical of his son Peter, easily irritated, is rather withdrawn from the others.
(Actor must be able to play 17-19 yrs. old) withdrawn, unsure, awkward, immature, shy, sometimes amusing, attached to his cat, hates his mother and father’s constant quarrels, ages from the introverted teenager to the more mature 19-year-old who enjoys the company of the girls.
Dentist, stodgy, old-fashioned, disciplined, hypercritical, selfish, doesn’t like Anne’s behavior, not a people person. picky, unhappy with everything, whiny, a perfectionist, easily angered.
Austrian refugee living in the Netherlands, entrusted by Otto Frank with provisioning the occupants of the Annex and hiding them from the outside world. She was courageous, empathetic, compassionate, and friendly.
Helps Miep with the responsibilities of feeding and hiding the occupants of the Annex, employee of Mr. Frank’s company, a trusted colleague and friend. He is sympathetic to their plight, and is an honest and good man.
