HBO has never run a casting portal. There is no HBO auditions page, no submission inbox, and no network casting department reading tapes from the public. That is true of Euphoria, House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, The Last of Us and everything else on the slate.
What HBO has instead is the most casting-director-driven process in American television. Each production hires its own casting director, and on HBO those are frequently the most celebrated casting professionals working — people with Emmy wins, distinctive taste, and a documented history of casting unknowns in enormous roles. That is the actual answer to "how do I audition for HBO": you are not auditioning for HBO, you are auditioning for a specific casting office, and those offices are named.
This guide covers who those casting directors are and what they are credited on, the open calls HBO productions have genuinely run, what the work pays in 2026, where HBO shoots now, and how to spot the scams that increasingly impersonate real casting directors by name.

Does HBO hold open casting calls?
Almost never — but "almost" is doing real work in that sentence, and the exceptions are instructive.
The default is closed. A production hires a casting director, the casting director releases a breakdown to agents and managers, and submissions come back through representation. For a series-regular role on a flagship HBO drama, that is the entire process, and there is no public door into it.
The exceptions happen when a production needs something the agent pipeline cannot supply.
- When it needs children. The Harry Potter series ran a genuine global open call for Harry, Ron and Hermione, aimed at children aged nine to eleven in the UK and Ireland, with no acting experience required and submissions through a professional casting platform. More than 30,000 children applied, and the three leads announced in 2025 came out of it.
- When it needs specific authenticity. The second season of Task ran an open call through a professional casting platform for bilingual Latino actors aged 18 and over for speaking roles, under a SAG-AFTRA agreement, ahead of a Philadelphia-area shoot. No agent required to submit.
- When it needs volume. Background casting on HBO productions is open continuously, through background casting companies rather than through HBO.
The pattern is consistent: HBO opens up when the role requires a real person the agent lists cannot provide — a child, a specific language or community, a face nobody has seen. Those are exactly the roles a new actor can realistically win.
Which means the practical strategy is not to wait for an HBO open call. It is to be visible and submission-ready when one happens, because they are announced with weeks of notice and they close.
Who actually casts HBO shows?
This is the information that makes HBO navigable, and it is public. These are casting directors with verified credits on current and recent HBO and HBO Max titles:
- Kate Rhodes James — House of the Dragon.
- Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann — the Harry Potter series and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. They led the Potter search.
- Jennifer Venditti, with Mary Vernieu and Jessica Kelly — Euphoria. Venditti is known specifically for street casting and for finding performers outside the professional pipeline.
- Meredith Tucker — The White Lotus, and previously Veep and Boardwalk Empire.
- Cathy Sandrich Gelfond and Erica Berger — The Pitt. They won the 2026 Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series.
- Francine Maisler — Succession, and Emmy-nominated in 2026 with Amber Wakefield for the HBO Max limited series shot in Georgia.
- Bernard Telsey and Adam Caldwell — The Gilded Age.
- Stephanie Gorin and Rich Delia — It: Welcome to Derry.
- Gayle Keller — The Chair Company.
- Nina Gold — Game of Thrones, Chernobyl and John Adams for HBO.
Two things follow from that list. First, it tells you which casting offices to research and follow, because casting directors post breakdowns, speak publicly, and occasionally run open calls. Second, it tells you something about taste: Venditti on Euphoria and the Potter team's open search are both cases of HBO casting deliberately outside the usual pool. That is a real opening, and it is not a theoretical one.
If you are unclear on what a casting director does and does not control, our breakdown of what a casting director actually does covers it.
A note on HBO, HBO Max and the corporate situation
As of October 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery — HBO's parent — is in the middle of an unresolved acquisition process. Paramount Skydance and WBD signed a merger agreement in February 2026 and shareholders approved it in April; the Department of Justice cleared it in June; a group of state attorneys general and the Writers Guild sued in July, and the deal had not closed as of the most recent public reporting. Paramount has said that if it closes, Paramount+ and HBO Max would eventually merge into a single service.
For an actor, none of this changes anything about how you get cast. Shows in production stay in production, and they are cast by the same independent casting directors regardless of who owns the parent company. Treat corporate news as background noise and keep submitting.
What HBO roles are realistically available?
Background and extras
The accessible category, and on HBO's period and ensemble shows, a large one. The Gilded Age casts substantial background through Grant Wilfley Casting in New York City and across New York State, including children, teenagers and adults for period crowd work. Task shoots around Philadelphia. HBO Max's Georgia productions hire Atlanta background locally. No experience, no agent, no audition. See open extras casting calls.
Co-stars and guest roles
Every HBO series casts small speaking roles continuously, and these are the realistic speaking-role entry point. They go out as breakdowns, which means an agent helps enormously — but productions shooting in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and upstate New York routinely cast locally for them.
Children and teenagers
The Potter open call demonstrates the rule: when HBO needs children, it frequently goes public, because the pool of trained child actors is small and productions want range. Submissions for anyone under 18 are made by a parent or legal guardian, and state work permits, trust accounts and on-set schooling rules apply.
Specific-community and language casting
The Task open call for bilingual Latino actors is the template. HBO's writing frequently requires specific authenticity, and when it does, the production opens submissions rather than hoping an agent list covers it. If you fit a specific brief precisely, you are competing in a much smaller field.
Unscripted
HBO Max carries unscripted and documentary programming, much of it cast by independent unscripted production companies rather than by the network. No open HBO Max unscripted casting call was confirmed open as of October 2026, but these appear and close quickly — see reality TV casting calls.
What does HBO work pay in 2026?
HBO productions are SAG-AFTRA signatory productions, so minimums are contractual. Members ratified the 2026 TV/Theatrical agreement in June 2026; it runs through June 2030 with 3% increases every July. Rates in effect from 1 July 2026:
- Background actor — $231 per 8 hours. Special ability $241; stand-ins and photo doubles $270.
- Day performer — $1,283 per day.
- Three-day performer (television) — $3,252.
- Weekly performer — $4,456 per week.
- Non-union background — varies by market. The Gilded Age has posted non-union background work in upstate New York at around $187 a day.
Union background days also carry overtime at time-and-a-half for hours nine and ten, double time beyond, meal penalties, and adjustments for wardrobe, period costume, extensive hair and makeup, and bringing your own vehicle. Those bumps routinely add fifty to a hundred dollars to a day that most performers never claim because nobody tells them the bumps exist.

Where does HBO film now?
A meaningful share of HBO's prestige slate has moved outside the United States, and being honest about that saves people time.
The United Kingdom and Ireland
House of the Dragon and the Harry Potter series both shoot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shoots in Belfast. These are the titles people most want to be cast in, and they hire locally. They matter if you have the right to work in the UK or Ireland; if you do not, they are not a realistic target.
Canada
The Last of Us shoots in Vancouver and It: Welcome to Derry shot in Toronto. Both hire Canadian background and local performers.
New York
The strongest US market for HBO work. The Gilded Age shoots in New York City and upstate, including Newport and the Albany/Troy area, and The Chair Company shoots in Brooklyn and Manhattan. See casting calls in New York and New York extras casting.
Los Angeles
Euphoria shot its third season in LA, The Pitt shoots on Burbank soundstages despite its Pittsburgh setting, and the DC series Lanterns shot at the Warner Bros. Burbank lot and in Piru. See casting calls in Los Angeles and LA extras work.
Philadelphia and Atlanta
Task shoots in the Philadelphia area, and HBO Max has shot limited series in Georgia with Atlanta-based location casting. Both are markets where a local actor has real odds, because the local professional pool is smaller than the number of roles. See casting calls in Atlanta.

How do you make a self-tape an HBO casting office will watch?
The first round on an HBO project is a self-tape in nearly every case, and the offices casting these shows watch hundreds per role. A large share get cut for technical reasons before the performance is assessed.
- Framing: whatever the notice says — close-up, mid-chest, waist-up, cowboy. Film your slate horizontally.
- Lighting: even on your face. No window behind you.
- Background: plain, contrasting with your hair and skin.
- Sound: quiet room, AC and fans off. Bad audio closes a tape faster than bad acting.
- Slate: relaxed and yourself unless the notice says in character.
- File name: exactly the convention given.
- Do not over-produce. HBO casting offices that street-cast are looking for a real person, not a showreel. Specificity reads; polish often does not.
How to spot a fake HBO casting call
You never pay to audition. Not for a slot, not for a workshop that promises a callback, not for mandatory headshots, not for travel booked in advance of a signed contract.
The dominant scam in this part of the industry is no longer a generic fake casting call — it is impersonation of real, named casting directors. The Casting Society has warned about it directly, describing impostors using working casting directors' names on social media and lookalike domains, then asking applicants to send money for travel or visas. Because HBO's casting directors are publicly credited, they are among the most impersonated.
The Federal Trade Commission published a consumer alert on virtual casting call scams in December 2025, describing unexpected texts from supposed talent scouts offering fast-turnaround auditions for real, recognizable titles, which then become sales pitches for photo shoots or classes.
- Unexpected texts or DMs naming a real HBO show. Legitimate casting does not cold-text strangers.
- A casting director's name plus an unfamiliar domain or a new social account. Verify through the casting office or the Casting Society before replying.
- Any request for money, including travel or visa costs paid up front.
- Requests for bank details, Social Security number or identity documents before a signed booking with a named production and payroll company.
- Guaranteed roles or guaranteed callbacks. Nobody can promise either.
- Pressure to decide immediately. Real casting gives deadlines, not ultimatums.
Report suspected scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, forward scam texts to 7726, and contact SAG-AFTRA if the union's name is invoked.

How To
Stop Looking for HBO and Start Looking for Casting Offices
There is no HBO audition to find, and the time people spend looking for one is the single biggest waste of effort in this search. HBO’s shows are cast by independent casting directors who are publicly credited, and those are the people whose breakdowns you want to reach. Learn the names attached to the shows you would be right for, understand what kind of performer each one casts, and build your materials to be submission-ready the moment one of their breakdowns is open to you. That reframing is the whole job.
- 1Get Your Materials to a Professional StandardA casting office at this level cuts most tapes on technical grounds before assessing anyone’s acting. You need a current headshot that genuinely looks like you today, an honest résumé, and a self-tape setup that does not get in the way: even light on your face, a plain contrasting background, a quiet room with the AC off, and a reader off-camera. Follow each notice’s framing, slate format, file naming and deadline exactly.Pro Tip: Fix your audio before you upgrade anything else. Bad sound closes a tape faster than a bad read, and a quiet room costs nothing.
- 2Take the Open Doors: Background, Local Markets and Specific BriefsHBO’s accessible work is not hidden, it is just unglamorous. Background casting runs continuously through background casting companies — The Gilded Age casts period crowd work across New York State, Task shoots around Philadelphia, HBO Max productions hire locally in Atlanta. And when a production needs something agent lists cannot supply, it opens up: the Harry Potter series ran a genuine open call for children with no experience required, and Task ran one for bilingual Latino actors. If you fit a specific brief precisely, your competition shrinks enormously.Pro Tip: Register free with the background casting companies in your market and keep your photos current. Background work also builds SAG-AFTRA eligibility — three days under a union agreement, evidenced by pay stubs.
- 3Apply Consistently and Be Findable When a Call OpensHBO open calls are announced with weeks of notice and then they close. The people who make them are the ones who already had current photos, accurate stats and a working tape setup on the day it was announced. Keep a complete casting profile, apply steadily to roles you genuinely match rather than in occasional bursts, and follow the casting offices and platforms where these announcements actually appear.Pro Tip: Verify any casting director who contacts you. Impersonating real, publicly credited casting directors is now the most common scam in this corner of the industry — and HBO’s casting directors, being the best known, are the most impersonated.
