Warm, talkative, and steeped in the routines of her home life, Thelma is a woman who uses chatter, caretaking, and small comforts to keep the world steady. Beneath her practical exterior, she carries deep anxieties, regrets, and unspoken guilt that surface as the night unfolds. Actors should bring emotional dexterity, humor grounded in truth, and the ability to navigate sharp tonal shifts as Mama confronts an unthinkable situation with both denial and fierce love.
Direct, methodical, and emotionally contained, Jessie is a woman who has lived with chronic illness, disappointment, and a profound sense of futility. She speaks plainly and acts with quiet determination, revealing a grounded pragmatism rather than melodrama. Actors should bring a nuanced stillness, clarity of intention, and the ability to reveal the powerful internal life beneath Jessie’s calm, steady presence.
