About the project: Around the Snake Turn is a drama that takes place in several locations in a tribal area of West Africa. Kwame and Baaba, have barely finished celebrating their son Yoofi’s scholarship when he is accused of a crime. Once the accusation is made to the local priest — the village leader and arbiter of justice — nothing can prevent him from placing a curse on the extended family. The belief is that the curse will bring continual tragedy to the offender’s family until they atone by offering a young virgin girl to serve as a “wife to the gods.” Realizing her 11-year-old daughter, Aku, is at risk to be named to serve, Baaba challenges the accusation and searches for a way around the curse. West African; Aku's father; Baaba's husband. He is part of an extended family within the tribal community. His father is the patriarch of the family. Hard work has made him seem older. He is muscular, with the hardness, thick hands and leather skin of someone who has worked on a fishing boat all of his life.
West African, Baaba's sister-in-law and close friend. They work together weaving. They both have daughters of similar ages.
West African in the market place; trokosi slave to the priest, Adukpo.
Woman in the city; works for an NGO.
Traditional West African Fetish Priest. He is a local religious and political leader.
