About the project: SYNOPSIS: From the Tony and Grammy award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, and co-written by Jessie Nelson (Waitress), Alice by Heart is a touching musical inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. As they travel through the tale, Alice by Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This world premiere musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times. This show has a Family Rating of PG-13. Additional info: Performers should prepare 16-32 measures of a song in the style of the show but not from the show (sheet music ONLY - tracks will NOT be accepted) and a 1 minute monologue. Alto/Mezzo-Soprano – A curious and imaginative young girl on the cusp of womanhood, determined to escape her grim reality during WWII by immersing herself in her beloved storybook, navigating the complexities of love and loss. Strong Character Development is REQUIRED to be cast in this role.
Tenor – Alice’s charming yet ailing childhood friend, grappling with tuberculosis, who oscillates between a frantic White Rabbit and a bitter March Hare as he confronts his mortality and his feelings for Alice. Strong Character Development is REQUIRED to be cast in this role.
Soprano – Strong Vocals REQUIRED – A tough and commanding figure who balances humor with authority, transforming from a caregiver to the domineering Queen of Hearts.
Soprano – A streetwise character with a sharp wit, whose guise as the Cheshire Cat serves as a guide for Alice through Wonderland with an air of mystery and gravity, balanced with compassion.
Alto/Tenor – A flamboyant street urchin with comedic flair, doubling as the Duchess who critiques Alice’s transition into adulthood; also, a subservient member of the Queen’s court.
Tenor – A fumbling doctor managing chaos in the Underground, whose anxiety is both comic and threatening, also taking on the role of the fearsome Jabberwocky, the cowed King of Hearts.
Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano – Strong Vocals REQUIRED – The Caterpillar that challenge Alice’s understanding of herself and a subservient member of the Queen’s court.
ALL ensemble will serve as understudies. You must be willing to take a named role to be in this production.
