Danielle, a socially awkward nineteen-year-old closeted lesbian, attends a birthday party for Bella — her popular classmate who shares the same birthday. Lost among cheerful guests, Danielle escapes to the balcony, where even on her birthday, the quiet pressure from home reminds her how unseen she feels in a world that doesn’t recognize her true self. Seeking refuge once more, she wanders into Bella’s room and discovers the girl’s own tenderness and hidden fragility. When Bella finds her there, the two begin to talk and see each other’s fragility. Through this fleeting moment of honesty and connection, the two girls begin to understand and liberate themselves, if only for a moment.

Danielle is a tomboy and a so-called late bloomer. She dislikes patriarchy and all the so-called duties and expectations placed on girls — putting on makeup, wearing feminine clothes, or showing interest in boys. Even though Danielle doesn’t seek attention, she longs to be loved and seen. She also has a soft spot for girls who seem to need care and support.
Bella is a kind and sweet girl everyone likes. She is talented and successful at school — a so-called early bloomer. Once people meet her, they never forget her. However, she sometimes feels that something is missing in her life. As she grows into her girlhood, she begins to realize that she has never truly thought about what she wants — beyond all the things she does to meet unspoken expectations and make others happy.
Drew is a generally chilled and nonchalant guy in his senior year from the same college with Bella and Danielle. He does not know what he’s doing for his life. He is intrigued by Danielle when he meets her at the birthday party because she is on her own, looking lost. He tries to be nice to Danielle in a flirtatious and sarcastic way, but unsuccessfully.
Cath is a happy and proud middle-aged mom of Bella. She thinks her daughter is the best daughter in the world, a girl who is always kind to people who are less fortunate than herself. Cath always tries to be inclusive, but sometimes she is oblivious to the ways her efforts make others uncomfortable.
