Seeking Performers for "Dorothea Puente Tells All!" Show
The company is holding auditions for "Dorothea Puente Tells All!" by Mark Loewenstern, and looking for performers, please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. About the project: On November 11, 1988, police discovered 7 bodies buried in Dorothea Puente’s yard, thanks in large part to the heroic efforts of a humble volunteer social worker. This charismatic, often funny con artist has come back from the dead to convince the audience that she was wronged. Like Shakespeare’s Richard III, Dorothea Puente Tells All! shows the rise and fall of an engaging and crafty villain who believes the audience is on her side. Mrs. Puente never stopped maintaining her innocence and some never stopped believing her. In unraveling the truth of Dorothea Puente, this play also shows the rest of us something about our own needs and vulnerabilities, and how we can protect ourselves from people who would exploit us. 9 roles
Dorothea’s nemesis. A self-effacing, churchgoing social worker who takes a special interest in Bert. She has a kindly heart but is overworked and irresolute. Capable of surprising strength.
A scruffy, sweet, mentally challenged man with a nasty case of psoriasis on his scalp. A favorite of numerous social workers and volunteers. Often inarticulate, he is more aware of what’s going on than he seems.
A retired carpenter. Lonely, estranged from his family. He is charmed by Dorothea Puente. He is less aware of what’s going on than he seems.
A bullshit artist of rare ability. People give him money even though they know they are being ripped off because he is so charming. He turns Dorothea from a small-time con artist into a true celebrity in Sacramento’s Latine community. His drink is V.O. and Seagram’s, and he drinks it often. It makes him happy.
One of numerous Latina women whom Dorothea took under her wing from the 1960s-1980s, beginning when they were toddlers. Ximena is grateful for Dorothea’s patronage, tolerant of her eccentricities. Ximena enjoys fantasies but is ultimately a realist.
Pat’s partner, a fellow outreach counselor for Volunteers of America. More focused, more fact-based, better able to network and navigate the bureaucracy than Pat. Taken in by Dorothea, she fails Pat at a critical moment.
Overworked, conscientious. Really does try to balance justice and mercy. One of several parole officers whom Dorothea fooled in the exact same way.
The opposite of a loose cannon, very aware of the limitations on his authority. He often tries, and often succeeds, in cracking suspects with some mind games of his own. Initially dismissive of Pat, he comes to respect her.
Wealthy but lonely. Sickly and starting to lose cognitive ability, she is unable to care for herself. Addicted to alcohol and painkillers. She distrusts hospitals and is desperate to be cared for by a loving hand. Helena knew Dorothea for some time before she put herself into her care, but it is not clear how much of their friendship is a story Dorothea spun.
