Dance Opportunities in "Rent" Show
Professional casting for "Rent" show. Find the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. Additional info: CALLBACKS: Wednesday, July 23 by invitation only, 3pm-9pm (Call times may be staggered based on individual availabilities) MUSIC: Please prepare 16-32 bars of a pop/rock or musical theatre song in the style of the show. Singing from the show is acceptable. Although an accompanist will be provided, those auditioning for Roger are encouraged to showcase any skills on the guitar. A bluetooth speaker will be provided for those choosing to bring an instrumental track. REHEARSALS: Rehearsals begin on Monday, August 4 with a mandatory cast meeting. Rehearsals will typically run Mondays - Thursdays from 7PM to 10PM & during the day on Saturdays 11AM to 3PM. A tentative rehearsal calendar will be available at the general audition. Please be sure to list ALL conflicts on your audition form, including days we may not have rehearsals. Rehearsals will be at the GPAC rehearsal space in the Veteran’s Park Event Center & move to the Uptown Theatre in Grand Prairie the week prior to tech. (Male presenting/identifying) Vocal Range: Tenor C#3–G4 Mark is an aspiring filmmaker who narrates the show as he documents the lives of his friends. He’s Roger’s best friend, caregiver, and roommate, and he was once Maureen’s boyfriend. Mark is the more nerdy, quirky friend of the group and, unlike most of his friends, he does not have HIV/AIDS.
(Male presenting/identifying) Vocal Range: Strong Rock Tenor F2–A4 Roger is a once-successful, now struggling musician who discovered he had HIV/AIDS in a note his girlfriend left before taking her own life. His goal is to write one great song before he dies, but he hasn’t played guitar in a year, fearing he’s lost his creativity. He’s Mark’s roommate and best friend, and is often depressed and sullen but capable of passion and expression. Skills: Strong rock tenor with guitar experience.
(Black or darker complected male presenting) Vocal Range: Baritone F#2–A4 Tom is a computer genius, philosophy professor, and anarchist recently expelled from MIT. He’s mugged in the opening scene, revealing the show’s harsh world. Despite his circumstances, he falls in love with Angel, knowing their relationship has little future due to their shared HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Note: Actor must be comfortable with staged intimacy with the same sex.
(Male presenting) Tenor Eb3-F4 Benny used to be Mark & Roger's roommate, but he married Alison Grey, a rich family involved with real estate, & he is now their landlord. He had been letting Roger & Mark live in the apartment for free, but he is now forcing them to pay rent or be evicted, going back on his agreement with his friends.
(Non-binary, or transfemme) Tenor with Falsetto/Alto/Mezzo C3-A4 Angel is a young drag queen & street percussionist infected with HIV/AIDS. As a person, Angel is the most generous & selfless character in the show. Though they have HIV/AIDS, they embrace life & live it to its fullest. ***Actor must be comfortable with staged intimacy with the same-sex. Strong mover with experience with dancing in heels. Percussion experience is preferred.
(Female presenting/identifying) Mezzo-Soprano C4-F5 Maureen is a bisexual performing artist & Mark's ex-girlfriend. She left Mark to be with her new girlfriend, Joanne. She is sexy, flirtatious, sassy, & funny. ***Actor must be comfortable with staged intimacy with the same-sex. Strong vocalist with excellent physical comedy skills & a presence large enough to lead a revolution
(Female presenting/identifying) Soprano with a Strong Belt Bb3-E5 Maureen is a lesbian Ivy League educated lawyer & activist. She struggles to not be jealous of Maureen's flirtatious nature with others. Though she was raised in an affluent, political family, she is committed to helping those less fortunate. ***Actor must be comfortable with staged intimacy with the same-sex. Strong vocalist with a confident belt & a commanding presence
(Female presenting/Identifying) Rock Alto F#3 to E5 Mimi Marquez works in a strip club & struggles with her addiction to heroin, which has resulted in her contraction of HIV/AIDS. She falls in love with Roger, who is unable to commit to a relationship with her. She is also Benny's ex-girlfriend. She is extremely sexy, optimistic, & likeable but with dark secrets. ***Actor must be comfortable with stage intimacy with the opposite-sex. Strong rock vocalist with dance experience
