About the project: In the year 1348, a plague has infested a small, desolate village hidden in a deep, dark wood. Alistair Drake, the last remaining plague doctor in the village, discovers that his brother caught the sickness and vows to find a cure to save him. However, the priest of the village, Father Salvador, does not trust such a remedy and orders Alistair to cease his research. Alistair disobeys wanting to save his brother and the village by any means necessary. With the help of his niece, Vivian Drake, they enter the woods in search of ingredients for their cure when Alistair stumbles upon a strange anomaly. With time running out for his brother, tension brewing with the church, and hope wearing thin, the doctor doubts his ability to find a cure after all. All he needs is a little help... and the forest will be sure to do just that for him. Additional info: NOTE: PG-13, This play shows depictions of death, sickness, and murder. A quiet and calm plague doctor whose only ambition is to care for others. Alistair wants to find the cure to the plague that had taken over the village, and to save his brother from the illness. He is an introverted spirit and specializes in medicines and alchemy. (M, 30+)
Niece of Alistair Drake and daughter of Robert and Elaine Drake, Vivian is a curious young woman wanting to aid in the journey of her uncle finding a cure for the black death and save her friend. She is ruthless and headstrong.
A cowardly, selfish priest who does not approve of Alistair’s aid in the plague. He turns away the sick for the underlying fear that he may become infected himself. He believes the plague is God’s wrath and those who have become sick are being punished.
Older brother to Alistair, Robert has contracted the black plague and has become gravely ill. He is a kind and generous man and a good, honest husband, brother, and father.
Wife to Robert Drake and mother to Vivian Drake. Headstrong woman who will do anything to ensure her family is safe. Severely worried for her husband’s fate, she becomes doubtful of Alistair’s abilities to find a cure.
An ethereal creature accidentally created by Alistair Drake. Gowned in elegant whites and golds, he resembles life itself. He is quiet, gentle, and graceful. He aids Alistair in his search for a cure. (M or F, young) (must be short and small to resemble a childlike stature)
Another ethereal creature accidentally created by Alistair Drake. Dressed in dark colors and feathers from a raven or crow, he resembles a symbol for death. He specializes in the deceased and sensing bad omens. He is mysterious, dark, macabre, and cunning. He aids Alistair in the search for a cure. (must be short and small to resemble a childlike stature)
The best friend (or lover) of Vivian Drake who has contracted the plague. Seeing her parents lose their battle with the plague, she is pessimistic about Vivian’s attempt in curing her. However, she is humble, kind, and a kindred spirit with Vivian.
An angry, selfish, and fearful member of the village that has contracted the plague. He is distrustful of Alistair, however his selfishness and desperateness contradict his beliefs towards the doctor. Possibly suffers from paranoid delirium from the plague.
A hopeful, level-headed member of the village who has contracted the plague. Believes in the work of the plague doctors.
A poor mother who has contracted the plague, and wants nothing more than to heal her sick child at home. Frightful and desperate, she often pleads for her and her child’s safety, begging the priests and doctors for guidance.
A deacon of Father Salvador. At times, he is doubtful of Salvador's decisions, but fear makes him follow the cowardly priest. He is obedient and reserved.
