On a magical night that “smiles three times,” an aging actress, a married virgin, a sex-starved divinity student, a jaded lawyer, and a buffoonish count find themselves hilariously tangled in a web of love affairs. Stephen Sondheim‘s ravishing score, set entirely in variations of waltz time, explores the universal subject of love across the generations. The winner of four Tony Awards with a score that includes his famous “Send in the Clowns,” A Little Night Music is a witty and moving masterpiece that has forever entranced the world of theatre. Additional info: AUDITION INFO: A headshot/picture is appreciated but not required. Those auditioning should prepare an audition cut (32 bars) of a classical musical theater selection (Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, etc.) not from the show. Have your sheet music clearly marked, in the correct key, in a binder with pages copied double- sided to minimize page turns. An accompanist will be provided; there will be no a cappella auditions or tracks. Aside from the character of Petra, all parts require a “legit” Broadway singing style. Everyone in the cast must be able to waltz and move gracefully. There is a dance component to the audition, so please dress accordingly. Doors open half an hour prior to the stated audition time. Callbacks by invitation only will include readings from the script and singing a song from the show. Vocal range: F#4 – C3. (Contralto) Desiree‘s elderly mother; A former courtesan, she is brutally honest and quite wealthy, having amassed a tidy fortune as a result of her discreet encounters with the crowned heads of Europe. Her character serves as a storyteller, providing perspective and wisdom throughout the musical.
Vocal range: G3 to B4 (High tenor, or tenor with a good falsetto). Fredrik‘s gloomy son. He is serious but confused, as he studies for the Lutheran priesthood. His sexual repression is a great cause of his conflict. He is a cellist, so the ability to truly play the cello is a major advantage, but it is not a requirement!
Vocal range: G#3 to Ab5 (Lyric Soprano). Giddy and virginal; naive and innocent. A breathtakingly gorgeous child bride, and Fredrik’s new wife. She is still a virgin after 11 months of marriage.
Vocal range: A2 to E4 (Baritone). Sexy, confident, aristocratic, charming, middle-aged lawyer who is married to his very young second wife, Anne, and has a son, Henrik, from his first marriage. Having a mid-life crisis but he doesn‘t know it.
Vocal range: F#3 to F5 (Belter). Anne’s brash, flirtatious, earthy maid and closest confidante. She believes in living in the moment and never passes up an opportunity for a quick rustle in the hay.
Vocal range: F#3 to Ab5 (Mezzo/Contralto). A beautiful, self-absorbed, once-successful actress, now tiring of the “glamorous” life of touring the Swedish countryside. Independent, alluring, glamorous, confident, and used to running life her own way, she becomes entangled in a love triangle with the Count and Fredrick.
Vocal range: G3 to F#4 (Powerful, High Baritone). A vain and arrogant military officer; splendidly proportioned but ferociously jealous. While married to the Countess, he is Desirée‘s newest lover and nowhere near as clever as he thinks he is.
Vocal range: G3 to F5 (Contralto). The Count’s mistreated and downtrodden wife, witty, melancholic, desperately in love with her philandering husband. She is fully aware of his repeated infidelities but is powerless to stop them. She is practical and sharp-witted, possessing a rapier wit.
Vocal Range: Speaking role. Madame Armfeldt‘s butler/manservant. He knows much but says little. He is well-built, and has a rustle in the hay with Petra.
Vocal range: Soprano, Mezzo, Contralto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass. Three men and three women. These singers serve as a Greek chorus, providing commentary and comic relief throughout the show, reflecting on the characters and their situations. They also double as other characters. Must move well and gracefully. Dance training is a plus, but not a requirement.
