About the project: Based on the 1975 documentary of the same name, Grey Gardens explores the complex relationship between Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter “Little Edie” alongside a colorful cast of friends, relatives, and felines. Opening in an era of glamour and ending with the mansion crumbling around them, mother and daughter each seek independence, meaning, and fulfillment in their own ways. Additional info: Performance dates: March 28-April 6 Singing: Please prepare 16 to 32 bars of a song of your choosing. An accompanist will be available and you will need to provide sheet music. Tracks are accepted but singing a cappella is not accepted. Dancing: Come in comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothes for the dance portion. Acting: Readings will come directly from the script. Rehearsals: Will start in late January. Most rehearsals begin at 6:00 or 6:30 on weeknights and during the day on weekends. In the 1940s is a glamorous, if out-of-touch, society woman. As friends and family take new paths that lead away from her, she struggles to cope with the changes, ultimately at the expense of her daughter’s chosen future. “Little” Edie Beale in her middle age in the 1970s feels deeply unfulfilled at Grey Gardens but unable to leave. Filled with longing for a life unlived, she battles with her critical mother for respect and acknowledgement.
(Act 2) (C4-D5) “Big” Edie’s life trajectory has changed sharply since the glamorous days that precede her. Now living alongside her daughter “Little” Edie in squalor at Grey Gardens, Edith possesses a sharp tongue and wit that she often wields against her namesake. She, too, longs for days past, but her emotional stubbornness tends to mask her uncertainty.
(Act 1)/SISTER MARLA (Act 2) (G3-C5) A bold woman with her whole life ahead of her, Edie has big dreams for the future. Having a highly conservative father and a flamboyant, manipulative mother has left Edie somewhere in the middle. Her fondness for and frustration with her mother exist in equal measure. This person will also have a solo as Sister Marla in the church choir scene in Act 2. This role involves choreographed physical intimacy.
(B2-F4) A composer, pianist, and chosen family of Edith. Gould benefits from his close, if ambiguous, relationship with a member of the wealthy Bouviers, but big changes on the horizon stir him to seek a change.
(Act 1)/JERRY (Act 2) (C3-F#4) An all-American Joe Kennedy, Jr. who has big ambitions. In Act 2, this actor will also portray Jerry, the handyman at Grey Gardens. Jerry is a mild presence in the tempestuous house, the object of Edith’s affection and Edie’s ire. This role involves choreographed physical intimacy.
(Act 1) /NORMAN VINCENT PEALE (Act 2) (Db3-F4) Major Bouvier is Edith’s father and Edie’s grandfather. He is a very traditional man who finds his daughter’s antics unacceptable and will go to great lengths to preserve the family’s image. In Act 2, this actor will also portray minister Norman Vincent Peale conducting “The Positive Prayer Hour.”
(Act 1)/BROOKS, JR. (Act 2) (Db3-Bb3) Brooks, Sr. in Act 1 is a dedicated family butler with a stiff upper lip. Brooks, Jr. in Act 2 works as the Grey Gardens groundskeeper.
