About the project: Emma by Jane Austen is a classic novel set in the early 19th century in the English village of Highbury. The onstage adaptation revolves around the life of Emma Woodhouse, a precocious young woman who fancies herself a matchmaker and unwittingly creates romantic misadventures. Additional info: Callbacks: November 16 (by invitation) Show Dates: January 31- February 15, 2025 You can find the form attached. Cold reading from the script, sides provided. Group reading from the script. Bring a list of scheduling conflicts on November 16 and from December 1 through February 15, a current photo, and resume. During auditions, you will have the opportunity to do a single read from the prepared sides, and a group reading with those in your group. Expect auditions to last roughly 15 - 30 minutes and callbacks for roughly two hours on Saturday the 16th. Rehearsals will start in early December. One of the expectations for the show is for actors to commit to memorization during the month of December so that rehearsals in January are spent working on the bits and comedic timing. Very pretty and accomplished, willful, highly intelligent, sophisticated and at times foolishly arrogant. She is always confident of being right, as she’s rarely been held accountable for being wrong. Though a bit spoiled, Emma has a strong affection for her father.
Emma’s elderly father. An expert worrier whose hypochondria is a source of continual amusement, he basks in Emma’s attentions and resists any kind of change. Although he indulges in his whims, he also expresses concern for the health of others.
A close friend of the Woodhouse family. A handsome and rational gentleman with great judgment and tact; he acts as an adviser to Emma, and while he does not initially speak of his love for her, it is his true motivation.
Emma’s former governess and the new wife of Mr. Weston. She has the fondness for Emma as a friend, but also the care of a sister or a mother.
A kindly and cheerful neighbor of the Woodhouses, and the father of Frank Churchill by an earlier marriage. Genial, generous, easygoing and warmhearted.
The rector of Highberry, who is looking for the right marriage that best suits his own deeply valued self-interests.
A soft, amiable and adoring orphan of unknown parentage. Befriended by Emma, she is easily swayed, especially as she is of a class below Emma’s. Eventually she finds her own path and decides to marry the man she first loved.
A capable young farmer, in love with Harriet Smith. While not upper class, the Martins are self sufficient and successful.
A middle-aged spinster, kind but terribly talkative. Lives in genteel poverty with her ailing mother.
A beautiful and talented young woman who is visiting Highberry to stay with her aunt, Miss Bates.
The very handsome and well-mannered son of Mr. Weston. He was raised by a wealthy and controlling aunt, and is visiting Highberry for the first time.
The vain, nouveau-riche wife of Mr. Elton. She cannot imagine that her views and assistance are not prized by everyone on whom she lavishes them.
Old, frail, and nearly deaf, she is always at the side of her daughter, Miss Bates. Though non-verbal, her feelings are obvious in her reactions to those around her.
