About the project: On Mother's Day, a janitor dreaming of success must decide between his career and his family before he loses both forever. MARK is a janitor at a prestigious company. Though he’s driven, tenacious and professional, he’s never been able to get the job he wants: a sales position at the company he currently works at. Well past thirty, he’s feeling pressure from his mother to make something of his life, to find the success she’d been shepherding him towards at such a young age. So he lies. Ashamed of himself, he tells her that he already has the job, interviewing again and again to try to make his lie a reality. He’s been trying for a long time, and as he puts in more hours to make ends meet, he fears that he won’t be able to keep up his deception for too much longer. MARIE is Mark’s mother. A working class single parent, financial stability for her family has always been at the forefront of her mind. Even after many years of providing for her son and saving up just enough to retire, she remains very concerned about money. But for now, at least, she can rest easy knowing that her son has a stable sales career, and even if this limits the time the two can spend together, she is proud of Mark’s accomplishments. But for him to be distant on a day like Mother’s Day? That’s just a step too far. As Marie waits in her apartment for Mark, she is accompanied by JOSELYN, a friend of Marie in a similar situation. Like Marie, she also has been seeing her children less and less as they become more and more involved in their careers, and can empathize with her when Mark doesn’t show up on time. Meanwhile, Mark is in a job interview for that coveted sales position, led by ARTHUR, his aloof and somewhat dismissive boss. Mark getting that job anytime soon is already out of the question…but can he still afford to fight for it now that it’s putting strain on his family life? Lead: MARK is both a son and a janitor who is caught in a cycle of disappointment and self-doubt, his frail and bearded appearance reflect just that. He struggles with his identity, feeling inadequate due to his job, despite his aspirations. Along with the demands and long hours of his job, he is also tasked with being there for Marie. Balancing both a family and work life becomes a struggle.
Supporting: MARIE. A warm yet frail woman living in the Carmello Assisted Living Facility. MARIE embodies a style that reflects her past—a love for antiques and floral prints that are now faded. She is amiable and nurturing but carries the weight of loneliness, longing for more connection with her son who always seems to be caught up in his job.
Supporting: Outgoing, supportive, wistful, and humorous, JOSELYN (67, Black/White) is Marie’s best friend. She is full of life and has a hint of nostalgia for her own lost youth. She’s a window into Marie’s life outside of her relationship with Mark. Her character serves as a gentle reminder of the family ties that can fade over time.
Supporting: As Mark’s boss, ARTHUR is a figure of authority who is sympathetic yet firm. He is professional, supportive, slightly aloof, and pragmatic, and while he recognizes Mark’s potential and genuinely wants to help him advance, Mark is also bound by company rules.
Extras: Description: Various employees in the office, who might be seen at desks or passing through the hallways. They should convey a busy office environment. (4-5 people)
