About the project: The Importance of Being Earnest was first performed in 1895 and is a comedic play that satirizes the conventions and manners of Victorian society. The subtitle of the play, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People, aptly captures Wilde’s tongue-in-cheek take on the cultural milieu to which he was subject. Set in England during the late 19th century, the play follows the lives of two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who adopt fictional identities to escape social obligations. Jack invents a brother named Ernest, while Algernon creates an invalid friend named Bunbury. The plot unfolds with mistaken identities, clever wordplay, and humorous social commentary. Also known as Ernest is a wealthy young gentleman who takes life seriously. He is a friend of Algernon whose behavior he sometimes deplores. Jack is Cecily’s guardian and is in love with Gwendolen Fairfax.
Algernon is the brilliantly witty and blithely selfish nephew of Lady Bracknell and cousin to Gwendolen Fairfax. He is Jack’s best friend and falls in love with Cecily Cardew.
Gwendolen is Algernon’s young, aristocratic, and charmingly superficial cousin and Lady Bracknell’s daughter. She is in love with Jack.
Cecily is a young woman given to romantic fantasies and intrigued by the wickedness of Jack’s brother. She is the simpler, more innocent country girl to Gwendolyn’s sophisticated city girl.
She is domineering, cunning, mercenary, and snobbish. She is Gwendolen’s mother, and she means to see her daughter well-married. A formidable woman, Lady Bracknell is used to having her own way in all ways.
Chasuble is the pleasant rector on Jack’s estate and has a crush on Miss Prism.
She is Cecily’s pedantic governess. She is somewhat puritanical, but her softer side leans toward Dr. Chasuble. She once wrote an important novel.
Lane is Algernon’s housekeeper. Lane has a dry sense of humor and tends to mock their employer, who is only interested in Lane to the point that it affects himself.
He is Jack’s employee in the country, and the rural equivalent of Lane. Merriman is aware of all of the happenings of the house because he is always nearby, but holds themself back from interjecting their thoughts.
