About the project: Once on This Island is set in the French Antilles, and tells a story with overt themes concerning colonialism, racism, colorism, classism, and caste. There are some depictions of sexuality, violence, manipulation, exploitation, abandonment, and death. Actors of all ages, levels of experience, and body type are invited to audition, but due to the themes of the piece, actors of Black and Islander (Pacific, Caribbean, Indian, or African) background will be given preference in casting. Additional info: Bring sheet music in your key. Accompanist will be provided. Selections from the show or contemporary Musical Theatre are recommended. Please be prepared to dance in comfortable clothes and flat shoes or sneakers. Rehearsal Dates: Generally Monday-Friday, 6:30-9:30 pm Rehearsals begin Thursday, September 12 Tech/Designer rehearsals with revised schedule (some weekends) begin Sunday, October 27 Performance Run: November 15 -December 8, 2024 Possible extension through December 15 (No show on Thanksgiving Day) Show Days: Thursdays, 7:30 pm, Fridays, 7:30 pm, Saturdays, 3 pm & 7:30 pm, Sundays, 3 pm. The Goddess of Love, beautiful and elegant with a strong belief in the power of love. She has a sympathetic heart and extends a lot of grace towards Ti Moune on her journey. Strong soprano, B (below C) to E (2 above C)
The Demon of Death, the story's main antagonist. Determined to prove that death will prevail over love. Lithe, mysterious, and sinister. Strong singer. Dance background a plus. Strong baritone, C Sharp (below C) to G (above C)

Ti Moune's adoptive father. Content with the life he has created alongside his family, even as he accepts that Ti Moune must go beyond their village to find herself. Strong baritone, A (2 below C) to E (above C)
A spirited dark-skinned peasant girl who has been adopted. She is brimming with curiosity, earnestness, and energy. Falls tragically in love with Daniel. Strong alto belt, G (below C) to E (2 above C); dance background a plus.

Daniel's betrothed. A light-skinned member of the ruling class who belittles and ostracizes Ti Moune in order to win Daniel's heart and secure her future. Doubles in the ensemble. Strong singer.
Daniel's light-skinned stern upper-class father. Sympathetic to his son's divided loyalties, but ultimately adamant that he stick to his own caste to protect the family's wealth. Doubles in the ensemble. Strong singer.
