Seeking Performers for "Pacific Overtures" Show

Baritone or Mezzo. The play’s narrator who explains and comments on the action of the story. He will also occasionally join along with the play’s characters.

Baritone. Asian/Japanese. A clever fisherman turned Samurai who is exposed to the western ways but remains immersed in the traditions and values of Japan.

Baritone. Asian/Japanese. A minor Samurai chosen by the Shogun to defend his country against the foreigners and later becomes Governor of Uraga. Kayama embraces western ideology and customs, creating tension with his friend, Manjiro. Feels a large sense of honor and duty to his position.

Baritone or Mezzo. Asian/Japanese. First Counselor to the Shogun who eventually becomes Shogun himself. Bends to western ideologies at a grave cost.

Kayama’s wife who fears her husband will not be successful in his mission to keep the Americans and is struck by grief.

All will double as other roles including Shogun, Shogun’s Mother, Admirals, Samurais, Councilors, & Observers, etc. All will be playing multiple roles. Men will be playing male and female roles and women will be playing female and male roles.
