"A Christmas Story" The Musical Needs Performers

Description:

Seeking cast for "A Christmas Story" the musical. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. See more info below. About the project: SYNOPSIS: Nine year old Ralphie Parker wants one thing for Christmas, and one thing only: An Official Red Ryder Range Model Carbine Action BB Gun. There’s only one problem: everyone else is convinced he’ll shoot his eye out! Undeterred, he begins his saga of convincing all the necessary players, from his sweet but protective Mother, to his straightlaced teacher, Miss Shields, all the way to Santa Claus himself, that he needs that gun for the protection of his loved ones, and maybe even a little cowboy glory to call his own. Ralphie’s vivid imagination conjures up several showstopping numbers, from “Ralphie to The Rescue” in which he defeats every foe a young boy can think of (robbers, mustache twirling villains, and of course, the school bully), to the thrilling tap routine performed by a gun moll-esque Miss Shields, who sheds her sweater set and romance novel for a glittery red gown and a whole lot of moxie. And Ralphie’s not the only one with dreams of grandeur. His old man is just as set on a goal of his own, namely, winning a prize in the $50,000 Great Figures of World Literature Contest. His dreams come true when he wins a major award from the competition in the form of a garish, fishnet stocking clad leg lamp, which horrifies his wife but brings him unadulterated joy. In the biggest number of the show, the Old Man dreams up a fantastic dance sequence, developing from a euphoric ballet, to a sultry tango with his wife dressed a la lamp, and finally to a show stopping leg lamp can-can bringing the number to a triumphant close. Filled with quirky and lovable characters, this zany, heartfelt, and nostalgic musical is as delightful as the biggest, shiniest present under the tree on Christmas morning. Additional info: Rehearsals: November 11th November 21st. Performances: November 21st - December 24th. If you are interested, please apply.

Jean ShperdMale40-59 y.o.All ethnicities

Jean Sheperd is based on the real man of the same name, who wrote the original source material for the movie and thereby the musical. The play begins and ends at the radio station where he delivers his popular evening program, beloved for the satirical stories he tells of growing up in the American Midwest in the 1930s and 40s. We understand Ralphie’s story to essentially be one of Jean’s childhood with minor fabrications and alterations. Jean is above all an excellent storyteller.

The Old ManMale40-59 y.o.All ethnicities

(Baritone F#4/Gb4-B3) The Old Man, aka Ralphie’s father, is a true character. He and his son are two peas in a pod when it comes the limitlessness of their imaginations. Like Ralphie, the Old Man has a prize in mind that will truly prove his worth. Instead of a BB gun, he dreams of winning a major award in the $50,000 Great Figures of World Literature Contest. When his wish comes true in the form of a garish, fishnet stocking clad leg lamp, he acts as if he’s just won a Pulitzer Prize.

MotherFemale30-49 y.o.All ethnicities

(Mezzo-Soprano D5-G3) Never has a character been so aptly named. Mother is the true matriarch of the family, and the leader of her household, though she would never let the Old Man know it. She is the embodiment of what a nine-year-old would imagine the perfect mother to be — caring but stern at times, warm and loving. In keeping with the tone of the play, she is also a little quirky, and while she certainly has all the tasks of her family under control, she is sometimes a little daffy.

Miss ShieldsFemale40-59 y.o.All ethnicities

(Alto G5-E3/Belt) Miss Shields is a fantastic, two-fold character role. In reality, she is a buttoned up, romance novel reading elementary school teacher with a fixation on her students writing within the margins. In Ralphie’s nightmarish fantasy that ensues after she gives him a C+ on his assignment, the classroom transforms into a roaring twenties speakeasy where Miss Shields performs as a tap dancing chanteuse.

Santa/EnsembleMale40-59 y.o.All ethnicities

(Tenor A#4/Bb4-C#3/Db3) The man playing Santa at Higbee’s Department Store probably shouldn’t be around children. He has one song, in which Ralphie and Randy and the ensemble of kids come to tell him what they want for Christmas. He drinks his way through it and though he may make a subtle effort towards being jolly, his comedic disdain for children and his job shines through.
