"They Promised Her The Moon" Stage Play Looking For Actors
Auditions for play "They Promised Her The Moon". Seeking cast. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. Please see the details below. About the project: SUMMARY: Based on the life and accomplishments of Geraldyn "Jerrie" Cobb, the first woman to test for space flight with NASA. Jerrie has passed every test every male astronaut has completed and has now moved into Phase Two of her NASA testing- the isolation tank. Jerrie navigates her time in the isolation tank for a record-breaking nine hours as complex memories of her life in Oklahoma, family, passion for flying, and challenges unfold around her in her mind. After her record-breaking accomplishments are noted in the press, Jerrie finds herself the reluctant face of the all-female astronaut training program, the Mercury 13. That is, until congress gets their hands on the information and shuts down the program because as one congressman puts it “we wouldn't want to launch a lady into space at the wrong time of the month.” With the loss of her dream and her goal, Jerrie is bereft and without the support of those who once meant the world to her until she finds her way back to herself and to the joy of aeronautics in unexpected ways. A fitting description from Playscripts reads “They Promised Her the Moon is a compelling drama about the challenges of sisterhood and fighting for the greater good.” Additional info: Please see the flyer attached. Show dates: September 27- October 6. If you are interested, please apply.
20 roles
Lead. Enigmatic, self-possessed heroine. Oklahoma girl who broke both gender and world flight barriers, while trying to hide herself in so many ways. Dubbed by the press as "the woman who excels in loneliness". She became the first female to train as an astronaut and surpassed her male counterparts in nearly every mental and physical exam. Portrayed from 7-50 years old. (Role cannot be doubled)
Famed aviatrix and one of the first female racing pilots. Jackie led the WASPs in WWII, won the harrowing Bendix race, and took pride in looking good while doing it. She was the outspoken impetus behind the testing of female pilots for NASA and managed her cosmetics empire. Portrayed from 30-55 years. Throughout the play we see her career evolve and her role in aeronautics shift from pilot to advocate much to her chagrin. (Role cannot be doubled)
Dedicated aeronautics scientist and physician. A long time friend of Jackie who believes there is a place for women in space flight, but who is also beholden to funding and institutional pressures.
Jerry’s mother. She raised two girls alone during WWII and hopes to protect them from the challenges and disappointment of the world by instilling her traditional perspectives on gender roles into their lives.
Jerry's father. A WWII pilot turned automobile salesman. He cares deeply for Jerrie and her flying career. As his purpose has shifted he has turned to alcohol as a means to cope and reminisce.
Jerrie's first grade teacher in Oklahoma. Unyielding and frustrated by Jerrie's quiet demeanor.
A famed WWII pilot and businessman with ample amounts of suave and swagger. He and Jerrie were in a relationship for years while she worked as a ferry pilot for his company.
New York congressman. A proponenet of women in the space program and the chairman on the congressional subcommittee to determine the "validity" of their participation in osce training and flight. He is an advocate, but feels his hands are tied by "social norms" and election expectations.
“Southern” congressman. Also a member of the subcommittee to discuss women in the space program. He is boisterously against female participation and while "smooth talking" is also openly hostile during the hearing.
Famed pilot, Mercury 7 astronaut, and TV personality. He is as suave as he is slippery. While he is belowed by the press and the public, he is not a proponent of women in space flight as he feels it is "against the social order".
Experienced WWI and ferry pilot. Gives young Jackie Cochran crap for being a female pilot in the Bendix Race. (May be doubled or cast individually).
An overwhelmed buisness man who runs a travelling circus. He gives Jerrie access to his plane to distribute flyers and take patrons on ride. (May be doubled or cast individually).
One of Jerrie's early passengers at the circus. Terrified of his first time up in a plane, but trying (unsuccessfully) to maintain his composure. (May be doubled or cast individually).
A hopeful young pilot who seeks insipration. (May be doubled or cast individually).
Eager reporter looking to put a "female" spin on stories about Jerrie and the space program. (May be doubled or cast individually).
