Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon. with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La Bohème, Rent follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, struggles to find his place in the world; his roommate Roger, an HIV-positive musician, wonders how he will leave his mark before he dies. Mimi and Angel look for true love as they face the harsh reality of life as HIV-positive young people, while the businesslike Joanne seeks fidelity from her wild-child performance artist girlfriend Maureen. The group’s dreams, losses, and love stories weave through the musical’s narration to paint a stunningly raw and emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City in the late 1980s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Additional info: Production dates – 7/13-8/4 Friday’s at 7:30 pm, Saturday’s at 2 pm & 7:30 pm (no matinee on 7/13), and Sunday’s at 2 pm Rehearsals begin 5/13 and are typically Monday-Thursday from 6:30 pm-10 pm. Please prepare a one-minute selection of a Broadway-style song to sing. Bring a backing track via an auxiliary capable device. Directors will provide the speaker and auxiliary cable. Please bring a dongle if your device needs it. There will not be an accompanist and no A Capella auditions are accepted. Auditions will also have a dance portion. You will be taught a dance to show off your skills, so dress accordingly or bring a change of clothes and shoes to dance in, if needed. Please bring a headshot and resume. Please apply if interested.
