Emma is a high schooler and from a family of Chinese immigrants. She wants to fit in with the rest of her class at the expense of her and her mother's relationship. She doesn't value what she has until it's too late.
Emma's Mom places a high value on their Chinese culture and desperately tries to get Emma invested in their traditions, including the traditional Chinese food that she cooks each day.
Emma's Dad shares her mom's traditionalism, but also is empathetic to Emma's desires to "fit in" and tries to be the mediator when they butt heads.
