About the project: This hilarious satire of the “bonds of duty” centers on Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets the daughters of Major-General Stanley, including Mabel, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that due to the specifics of his apprenticeship contract and his misfortune to be born on leap year, he is duty-bound to serve for another 63 years. Frederic returns to his comrades as Mabel and her father convince a troupe of reluctant policemen to bring the pirates to justice. Their climactic battle ends in an improbable and hilarious send-up of being bound by one’s duty. Additional info: Approximately 16-32 bars (roughly a verse and chorus) from any similar musical: Light Operetta. You can choose something by the same composer (Gilbert & Sullivan – HMS Pinafore, Yeoman of the Guard) or anything in a similar style. Choose something in a good range for your voice.
