About the project: "Head Over Heels" is an exciting, bold new musical comedy from the visionaries that rocked Broadway with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Avenue Q, and Spring Awakening. This laugh-out-loud love is love is love story is set to the music of the iconic 1980’s all-female rock band The Go-Go’s and lead singer Belinda Carlisle, including the hit songs, “We Got the Beat”, “Our Lips Are Sealed”, “Vacation”, “Heaven is a Place on Earth”, “Mad About You”, and the title song. A hilarious, exuberant celebration of love in all its incarnations, "Head Over Heels" follows the escapades of a royal family with an array of secrets and issues on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction—only to discover the key to their realm’s survival lies within each of their own hearts. Adapted from an actual Elizabethan-era pastoral comedy of errors and mistaken identities, this musical fable proves that tolerance, acceptance, gender fluidity, inclusion, and, of course considering the composers, female empowerment are all tales as old as time. Additional info: Callbacks will be held Saturday, February 18, 11 am-3 pm. Candidates are asked to prepare 16 bars of an upbeat 80s pop song or analogous musical theatre piece with sheet music or an accompanying track. Singing selections from the show is allowed and encouraged. Be familiar with the suggested music for characters you wish to be considered for because you will be asked to sing from the show. When forced to disguise himself as a woman in order to stay near to his love, Musidorus discovers his unexplored feminine side and enjoys the power it gives him. Belt mezzo Basilius and Gynecia’s willful and confident older daughter. Not necessarily a traditional beauty, but her strong understanding of her self-worth and inner beauty convinces others she is the most beautiful bachelorette in Arcadia. She comes to understand who she really is and who the world wants her to be. Songs to know: “Beautiful”; “How Much More”
Belt soprano Basilius and Gynecia’s obedient younger daughter. Used to being in the shadow of her older, flashier sister, Philoclea has learned that her value lies in being a “good girl” who behaves according to the expectations of others, particularly her father, even when they conflict with her true desires. She is deeply in love with her childhood friend Musidorous and yearns to follow her heart despite what the hierarchy says. Songs to know: “Here You Are”; “Good Girl”
Power mezzo Handmaiden to Pamela with whom she also happens to be in love. Warm, skeptical, and strong, growing up without a mother has made her wise beyond her years about everyone and everything, which is why she is the often able to see the truths of others before they realize it for themselves. Songs to know: “Vacation”; “Automatic Rainy Day”
Power baritenor King of Arcadia. A distinguished man who was obviously formerly hot. Somewhat chauvinistic, he blindly thinks Arcadia is thriving under his strong masculine rule, which will be sorely tested during the course of the show. Songs to know: “This Old Feeling”; “Heaven is a Place on Earth”
Belt alto Queen of Arcadia. Strong, smart, sensuous, and still beautiful. Like any longstanding frustrated spouse, she begrudgingly bows to the will of the king, but events cause her to rekindle the strong sexual flame that has been obviously missing in her life for years. Wise and powerful though as a woman she is not always valued for these gifts. Songs to know: “This Old Feeling”; “Heaven is a Place on Earth”
Baritone The King’s viceroy; father to Mopsa. Wise, gentle, deeply loyal even when he disagrees with or doubts Basilius’s actions.. A single father who bears the weight of losing his wife. He adores his daughter but has difficulty expressing his feelings and processing the feelings of others. Feels the pressure of being keeper of the Oracle’s secrets Song to know: “We Got the Beat”
(Traditionally a drag queen). The Oracle; powerful, mysterious, glamourous, and alluring. Great sense of humor and knows all—they are the Oracle of Delphi, after all. Songs to Know: “Vision of Nowness”; “Heaven is a Place o Earth”
