About the project: Written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell and inspired by real events, Bright Star is a story of enduring hope woven through time and set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Young teenager Alice Murphy is devastated when her infant son is ripped away. But 20 years later, a young man enters her life and ushers in an unexpected glimmer of hope. With a Grammy®-nominated bluegrass score that will seep into your veins, this sweeping tale of love, loss and rebirth is as much a musical experience as it is a journey of the heart. Additional info: - Vocal Audition: Come prepared with your best 32 bars of a ballad and/or up-tempo in the Bluegrass or Pop-Folk Style. Auditionees may also sing a selection from the show. Sheet music is required in the proper key. Auditionees may also connect to a Bluetooth speakers with an accompaniment track. The track must be cued and ready to go. Callbacks: Auditionees must have the strong acting ability. Performers who are called back after the vocal and dance audition will be asked to audition with cold readings from the script. No advance preparation is required. - A tentative rehearsal calendar will be provided upon auditioning. Rehearsal conflicts must be noted on the audition form. - Resumes and headshots are welcomed but not required. - Auditionees should arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled audition time to complete audition forms or fill out and bring the audition form located on the website. To play Alice at age 38: an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, attractive, professional–but with an air of melancholy. The same actress will also play Young Alice at age 16: rebellious, high-spirited, sexually forward, adventurous–looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. Must be very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles. Vocal range: Very strong singer with a wide vocal range. F3-C5
Lead. A soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming, and a little naïve. Seeking strong actor who is also a strong, athletic dancer, able to partner and lead a production number. Vocal range: Bright, natural Bari-Tenor. C3-A4
The same actor will play Jimmy Ray in his early 20s in flashbacks: Mayor Dobbs’ son and young Alice’s beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built, and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business.
