Casting calls in Massachusetts benefit from something only a handful of states offer: a film credit with no annual cap and no project cap. The state pays a 25% payroll credit and a 25% production expense credit on a minimum spend of just $50,000 over twelve months. Union background work pays $231 per 8 hours in 2026, and the state minimum wage is $15.00 an hour.
An uncapped credit changes the rhythm of a market. In capped states, casting volume rises and falls with award cycles and quiet stretches are normal. Here, as in Georgia, the constraint is demand rather than a state fund, which makes production more continuous and makes year-round registration worth something.
This guide covers Boston auditions and the wider state, what the work pays, the rules for child performers, and how to tell a real Massachusetts casting call from a fake one.

How the Massachusetts credit works
- 25% payroll credit on qualifying aggregate payroll.
- 25% production expense credit on qualifying production, pre-production and post-production expenses.
- $50,000 minimum spend within a consecutive twelve-month qualifying period — low enough that independent features and even substantial commercial projects clear it.
- No project cap and no annual cap.
- Transferable, and a production may request a refund of 90% of unused credits after satisfying its tax liabilities, with a five-year carry-forward on the remainder.
The low minimum spend is the underrated part. A $50,000 threshold means small productions qualify, and small productions are where performers without credits actually get cast. States with a $1 million floor effectively exclude the work that beginners can reach.
Boston, and the rest of the state
Boston holds the crew base, the casting offices and the overwhelming majority of auditions. It is also a city productions use as itself rather than as a stand-in, which shapes what casting looks for: contemporary, regionally believable people rather than generic types.
Beyond the city, productions move to the North Shore, the South Coast and Cape Cod when locations call for it, and New York casting reaches into the state as well. State a realistic travel radius rather than limiting yourself to one town.
The accent question
Productions set in Boston look specifically for performers who can carry a credible local accent, and casting directors here can tell within a line whether it is real. If yours is genuine, say so and say where in the region it comes from — it is a castable asset and a narrow enough skill to be worth stating plainly.
If it is not genuine, do not claim it. There is a great deal of work in this market that does not require one, and a failed accent on tape costs you more than the single booking.
What does casting work in Massachusetts pay?
Union scale, effective 1 July 2026
On a SAG-AFTRA production, background work pays $231 for an 8-hour day, special ability background $241, and stand-ins and photo doubles $270. A day performer earns $1,283 and a weekly performer $4,456. Overtime, meal penalties, night premiums and wardrobe allowances are paid on top, and the production contributes 20.5% towards pension and health.
Massachusetts is not a right-to-work state. That does not prevent you working the non-union commercial, corporate and independent jobs that make up most of what is posted locally. Members are served by SAG-AFTRA's New England Local.
Non-union rates
Non-union work is negotiated per job and must meet the state minimum wage of $15.00 an hour. Massachusetts law requires that its minimum cannot fall below fifty cents above the federal rate, so the floor here rises automatically rather than being frozen the way it is in Georgia or Texas.
Commercial, corporate, healthcare and university work makes up a large share of the market and generally pays well above the floor.

Child performers in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is not one of the four states that require a child performer trust account. SAG-AFTRA lists only California, New York, Louisiana and New Mexico.
General youth employment rules still apply and vary with age and schooling, so confirm what a production expects before your child is booked. Ask in writing about working hours, schooling on set, who supervises your child between setups, and when and how payment is made. On a SAG-AFTRA production the union's young performer provisions apply regardless of state law.
How to spot a fake Boston casting call
Boston's very large student population makes it a standing target for fake agency and modelling approaches, often pitched as a scouting opportunity rather than a casting call.
- You are asked to pay to audition, to be submitted, or to be registered for a named production.
- A paid role is offered before any audition, from a photograph and a message.
- Money arrives first and you are told to deposit it and forward part onward. This is fraud without exception.
- The audition is at a private address or hotel room rather than an office, studio or secure self-tape platform.
- A named photographer is required before you can be considered, usually with a package price.

How To
Build a Boston Profile Casting Can Book From
Massachusetts has one of the few uncapped film credits in the country, which means production here is limited by demand rather than by a state fund. Casting screens online profiles first, so a current photo, an honest skills list and clear availability across the Boston area are what put you in the pool.
- 1Lead with a current, natural headshotBoston casts a lot of contemporary, naturalistic work: features and series that use the city as itself, plus a deep commercial, corporate, healthcare and university market. Use a recent, well-lit photo with simple wardrobe, add a plain full-length shot, and record a short piece to camera as yourself so casting can judge how you come across before shortlisting.
- 2List a real accent if you have one, and be honest if you don'tProductions set in Boston look specifically for performers who can carry a credible local accent, and they can tell immediately when it is approximated. If yours is genuine, say so and say where in the region it is from. If it is not, do not claim it — there is plenty of work here that does not require one, and a failed accent on tape costs you the casting director.
- 3Keep availability and travel range currentMassachusetts production spreads out from Boston to the North Shore, the South Coast and the Cape depending on locations, and New York casting also reaches into the state. State the towns you can get to and how long it takes, and keep notifications on, because an uncapped credit means productions can commit quickly.
