Casting calls in Alabama are concentrated around Birmingham, and the market is built on commercials, corporate work, faith-based features and independent film rather than on a standing network series. Union background work pays $231 per 8 hours at 2026 scale. Alabama has no state minimum wage law of any kind, so the federal $7.25 is the only floor that exists here.
That combination — real production activity and almost no statutory protection — is what makes a written agreement matter more in Alabama than in most states. The work is genuine. The rules are thin.
This guide covers Birmingham and Mobile auditions, how the state rebate rewards local hire, what the work pays, the rules for child performers, and how to spot a fake Alabama casting call.

Where the work is
Birmingham carries the state. It has the production services, the agencies and the largest share of casting notices, and it doubles convincingly for a range of mid-sized American cities, which is a good part of why commercials shoot there.
Mobile brings the Gulf Coast and a period-friendly downtown. Huntsville has grown alongside its aerospace and technology employers, which generates a steady stream of corporate and industrial work that rarely gets talked about but pays reliably. Montgomery draws productions working with the state's civil rights history.
Set your travel radius honestly and then keep it. Alabama productions regularly schedule Birmingham, Montgomery and Huntsville inside a single week, and a performer who can actually make an early call in all three is worth more to a casting office than one who says so and then cannot.
How the Alabama rebate rewards local hire
Alabama's incentive is a refundable rebate, and the figure that matters to a performer is the split between residents and non-residents.
- 35% of wages paid to Alabama residents
- 25% of wages paid to non-residents and of payments to suppliers
- 25% of qualified production expenditures
A production must spend at least $500,000 in Alabama to qualify, and no single project can claim more than $20 million. Because the rebate is refundable, a production collects the value whether or not it owes Alabama tax.
The ten-point gap between 35% and 25% is the whole argument for making your residency unmistakable. Casting an Alabama resident returns more of the money spent on them, and it removes travel and accommodation from the budget at the same time.
What the work pays
On a SAG-AFTRA production in 2026, background work pays $231 for an 8-hour day. Special ability background is $241, stand-in and photo double work is $270, and a day performer with a line is $1,283. Three-day players are $3,252, weekly players $4,456. Overtime, meal penalties and wardrobe allowances are paid on top.
Non-union work is negotiated per job, and here Alabama is unusually bare. The state has no minimum wage law. Employers covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act must pay $7.25 an hour, and Alabama law prevents cities from setting anything higher. There is no state overtime statute either.
Because almost nothing is guaranteed by Alabama statute, the written agreement is your protection. Confirm the day rate, the call time, the expected wrap, meal breaks and the payment terms in writing before you accept a non-union booking.
Union coverage
SAG-AFTRA covers most of Alabama through its Miami Local, which services Florida and Alabama together. Muscle Shoals is the exception: work there falls under the Nashville Local, which also covers Kentucky and Tennessee. There is no dedicated Alabama local office.
Alabama is a right-to-work state, and since 2016 that protection has been written into the state constitution rather than resting on statute alone. You cannot be required to join a union or pay union dues as a condition of employment.
In practice that means you can build a career here without joining anything. Most Alabama performers work non-union for years on commercials, corporate work and independent features before a union job ever comes up.
Child performers
Alabama is not one of the four states with a statutory Coogan trust requirement. SAG-AFTRA names California, New York, Louisiana and New Mexico as the states that compel a blocked trust account for a child performer's earnings.
Alabama's child labour framework also gives performers significantly lighter treatment than it gives other employment. That means more of what protects your child on an Alabama set comes from the production's own practice and from your agreement with them than from state law.
Before a child works, get the schedule, the hours, the schooling arrangement and the on-set guardian in writing. A professional production will supply all of it without being pressed, and a production that resists is telling you something useful.
How to spot a fake Alabama casting call
- It asks you to pay. A legitimate casting call never charges a fee to submit, to audition, or to be "registered" for a production.
- It names a famous title but no casting director. Real notices name the casting office. Fake ones borrow a title and stay vague about everything else.
- It offers an unrealistic day rate for background work. A notice promising several hundred dollars a day for extras in a market this size is advertising something other than the job.
- It moves off-platform immediately. A first contact that jumps straight to a personal messaging app and asks for identity documents is not a casting office.
- It asks for money or bank details before you have worked. Payment information is collected through payroll after a booking, never before.

How To
Register as an Alabama Local Hire
Alabama casting is screened online before anyone is invited to a room, and the state rebate returns 35% of a resident's wages against 25% for a non-resident. That gap, plus the travel and accommodation a local hire removes from the budget, is the strongest argument your profile can make for you.
- 1Make your Alabama residency explicitThe rebate returns 35% of an Alabama resident's wages against 25% for a non-resident, so local status is money to a production. Put your Alabama base at the top of your profile, state plainly that you work as a local hire with no travel or accommodation required, and name the cities you can reach for an early call time.
- 2Cover the whole state, not just BirminghamBirmingham holds the most notices, but Mobile, Huntsville and Montgomery all book, and productions routinely schedule several of them in one week. Set your profile to appear for Birmingham and state your real driving radius. Huntsville in particular generates steady corporate and industrial work that most performers overlook.
- 3Get the terms in writing before you workAlabama has no state minimum wage law, no state overtime statute, and a child labour framework that treats performers lightly. Almost nothing is guaranteed here by statute, so confirm the day rate, call time, expected wrap, meal breaks and payment terms in writing, and for a child performer add schooling and on-set supervision. A professional production provides all of it without objection.
