Blanche - as a part of the gentile Southern aristocracy – is not happy to have her youth fading away. She became a widow at a very young age and now, after being dismissed from her teaching job and losing the family estate, is at the end of her rope. She seeks refuge at her sister Stella’s, where she tries to hide her alcoholism – and desperation.
Blanche’s younger sister who lives in the dingy but lively French Quarter of New Orleans where she enjoys a passionate life with her more common, working-class husband Stanley, who thrills her. Blanches’ arrival and long stay takes a toll on her marriage as she tries to support both her increasingly fragile sister and her rugged husband whom she loves.
A veteran of WW2 and now a working class, hard-living brute of a man with palpable sexuality who wants to rule his ‘kingdom’ and keep Stella under his ‘coloured lights’ spell. His ‘ape-like’ behaviour and straight-talking attitude clashes with Blanche’s refined world and illusions, and he mostly he doesn’t trust her. Resentment builds to an explosive conclusion.
Could be a bit younger than Blanche -a southern ‘lady’ who definitely intrigues him. He served in the war with Stanley, now works at the same plant as him and is one of his bowling and poker buddies. He’s been devoted to his dying mother who wants to see him settled before she dies. Blanche feels he is a bit more of a gentleman than the other poker guys, which he is – until Stan discovers news of Blanche’s sordid past and makes sure Mitch hears about it.
She is the hard-living landlady of the Kowalskis and is a friend/protector of Stella’s. She lives in the apartment upstairs where she’s heard to have frequent rowdy quarrels with her husband Steve She is quick to foregive him, does loves him and chooses to stay with him ‘no matter what’.
Husband of Eunice who plays cards, bowls and drinks with Stanley, and has a love-hate relationship with his wife. He is known to flirt with other women. This marital relationship sadly mirrors the one Stanley and Stella have.
Stanley’s friend and one of the regular poker players. He punctuates games with Spanish phrases.
Neighbour to Kowalski’s and Eunice’s friend described in original play as “negro woman”.
The Doctor arrives at the end to bring Blanche on what she mistakenly thinks is a “vacation.”
The Nurse/Matron- a brutal and impersonal character, very institutional and severe. She wrestles a hysterical Blanche to the ground threatening a ‘straight’ jacket.
The Mexican Woman sells flowers for the dead during the powerful scene when Blanche recounts her fall from grace.
Various vendors (hot dog, lemonade), voices in Background (police, criminal, etc).
