A best-selling novelist, wry and privately resentful of the pulp romance series that made him famous, eager to be taken seriously as a serious writer at last. After a car crash on an icy Colorado road leaves both his legs shattered, he wakes to find himself the captive of a woman who calls herself his "number one fan," and must find a way to survive her hospitality, his own fear and pain, and the story she insists he write for her.
A former nurse living alone on an isolated Colorado farm, warm and folksy, quick to laughter and to a childlike delight in the romance novels she treasures above all else, but just as quick to sudden, unsettling swings into a darker temper when things don’t go her way.
The local county sheriff, easygoing and well liked around town, in no particular hurry about anything. A missing novelist and a string of small oddities catch his attention, and beneath his unhurried charm is a curiosity that won’t let a loose thread go, even as it leads him closer to danger than he expects.
