About the play: The Underground Man has spent the past 20 years living in a squalid corner of St. Petersburg in bitter, self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world. He has decided, for some reason, to not just reflect on, but write down, in full, one of his nastiest memories. A memory that has tormented him for years… something terrible that he did on a dirty, snowy Petersburg night 15 years ago. Adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s dark, tragic 1864 novella Notes From Underground. Rate: Non-union. This show will operate under a profit-share model. Additional information: This show will be put on at the Hamilton Fringe. Actors must be available for a tech day between July 11-15, and for all 7 show days between July 15-26, 2026 (festival dates). Actors must be able to transport themselves to Hamilton for the tech and show dates. We may also book an 8th show in July at the Sweet Action Theatre in Toronto, but this is unconfirmed. Location for rehearsals is flexible, but they will most likely take place in Mississauga and/or west Toronto. Rehearsals will start in May 2026 and run 2-3 times a week depending on actor availability. The projected table read date is May 9, 2026. What to Prepare: A 2-3 minute long dramatic monologue. Contemporary or classic, either is fine. Submissions are due April 18th. If you are selected, directors will book you in for a 10 minute audition slot. If you're interested, please apply.

Innocent and naive, but proud and touchy. Open-hearted and generous once her guard is down. She was sold into prostitution by her family, and has a debt to the madam as a result. She has been a prostitute for 2 weeks when she meets the Underground Man.
The Underground Man’s servant. He is prideful, domineering, and immoveable. The Underground Man does not have much, if any, control over him. They have a strange, co-dependent, hate-filled relationship.
An affected, boastful, charismatic military officer. He went to school with the Underground Man. He is doing well in his career. He is the “leader” of his friend group; Simonov and Ferfichkin look up to him.
A relatively quiet but assertive young man who went to school with the Underground Man. He was somewhat close to the Underground Man in the past, but their relationship is strained.
A malicious imp of a man who loves to giggle at others’ misfortunes. He also went to school with the Underground Man. They do not like each other at all.
