About the project: Independence (1984) is a searing and intimate portrait of the dysfunctional Briggs family of Independence, Iowa. The play centers on three estranged sisters—Kess, Jo, and Sherry—who reunite to confront their emotionally manipulative and unstable mother, Evelyn. As old wounds reopen, the sisters wrestle with guilt, obligation, and the painful pursuit of personal freedom—sometimes at the cost of family ties. Additional info: Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and each block is expected to last approximately 45 minutes. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early, prior to your scheduled audition time. Independence runs May 8-24, 2026. Rehearsals will begin the week of March 16, 2026 and will take place 3–4 evenings per week, Monday–Thursday Please arrive at least 15 minutes early, prior to your scheduled audition time. The emotionally disturbed matriarch who has lived her entire life in the family home. Evelyn uses manipulation, fear, and affection to keep her daughters close, creating a deeply stifling environment.
The eldest daughter and a university professor. She returns home intending to sever ties but finds her carefully constructed independence challenged, revealing emotional brittleness and repression.
The middle daughter, a longtime virgin who unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Jo is torn between her mother’s dependence on her and her own longing for unconditional love.
The youngest daughter—sharp-tongued, irreverent, and brutally honest. She masks vulnerability with cynicism and promiscuity, desperate to escape her family and what she sees as their emptiness.
