About the project: Set in a northern English mining town against the background of the 1984 miners' strike, the show follows eleven-year-old Billy Elliot who unexpectedly discovers a passion for ballet while his family and community face hardship and conflict. Secretly taking dance lessons, Billy must navigate grief, poverty, and rigid expectations as his talent brings both hope and tension to those around him. With the support of his teacher and, eventually, his family and neighbors, Billy pursues an audition for the Royal Ballet School and discovers that the only limitations in life are the ones we place on ourselves. Rate: This is a non-AEA production, roles are unpaid, and no housing provided. Additional info: Please include any conflicts you have for the rehearsal period (March 2 - April 30, 2026. Bring sheet music for (16-32 bars) a contemporary Broadway song that best shows off your voice and acting ability (no backing/karaoke tracks or acapella singing). You may be asked to perform a second selection. Dress to move and arrive stretched/warmed up. You will be asked to learn and perform a short piece of choreography to demonstrate your dance/movement ability. Only dance shoes, bare feet, or socks are allowed in the studio. Billy's stoic father. Full of working-class pride. A widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of the lengthy miners’ strike. He is still deeply scarred by the death of his wife. Billy's dancing initially sends him into a rage, but he learns to support his son, and even though it is deeply uncomfortable for him, he is ultimately willing to sacrifice everything for Billy. Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor
Billy's outspoken older brother. A passionate miner with a visceral hatred of the ruling class. Hotheaded and scrappy, he resorts to violence during the strike and shows raw aggression when Billy's secret dance lessons are revealed. Vocal Range: Tenor
A miner who also teaches the local boys to box. Frank, foul-mouthed, and questionable teaching techniques. Easily frustrated by Billy and Michael’s efforts. Vocal Range: Male voice
The chain-smoking, straight-talking, local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy's mentor. Hardened and mouthy, she actually has the capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy. She believes in the power of personal expression through dance. Vocal Range: Alto
(Dead Mum) Billy’s beloved mum, who died 2 years previously, but appears in Billy’s imagination. Kind, caring, with a strong emotional rapport with Billy. Will double as ensemble.
Billy's eccentric grandmother, who has a penchant for moldy pasties. She is forgetful and a little aloof. Despite her inattention, she harbors a bitter resentment towards her dead, abusive husband, but has found solace through dance. Vocal Range: Alto
Appears in a dream sequence with Billy. Should be a strong dancer in ballet, or move extremely well.
(Clipboard Woman) Chief secretary to the panelists during the Ballet Auditions at the Royal Ballet School, London. Takes her job very seriously and enjoys keeping things running smoothly. Very well spoken - RP Southern English accent. Vocal Range: Female Voice
(including Big Davey, Scab) Proud, tough, working-class men. Left school at 15 years old and went "down the pit’" Strong "Geordie" accents. An unbreakable loyalty to their community.
