After meeting longtime resident John Dodge, she uncovers a deeper truth beneath Middletown’s familiar surface. The play offers a wry, deeply human portrait of a town with two lives—one ordinary and visible, the other mysterious and unforgettable. Charming. Not a hot head – but easily frustrated. Doubles as Greg, an astronaut in orbit in outer space. Only slightly worried about being a cliché. Both of these characters talk with a voice “offstage”.
Wisest man in town, however, has a sobriety problem. A volunteer at the hospital. Sincere in their quest for answers. Doubles as the Janitor – one of the first people who meet Mrs. Swanson’s new son.
Drowning. Lost. Can withstand large thresholds of pain. His own worst enemy, even when trying his best. Maintains a certain level of unfortunateness. Doubles as Freelancer – Very aware – a collector of stories.
Doubles as four characters. Ground Control talks with Greg while he is in outer space. The other three roles have very different viewpoints for men. Different levels of moxie.
Librarian / Attendant / Radio Host, Classical Music Show Perpetuator of Middletown history & an owl of knowledge. Finds much satisfaction in analyses. Familiar and kind to every community member. Doubles as Attendant – helps with Mrs. Swanson’s hospital visit. Nurturing & genuine.
New to town. She is an expecting mother, and her husband is not there when he needs to be. Looking for answers to big questions. Lovely humor & sardonicism. Doubles as Woman during intermission audience.
Female Tourist / Cop’s Radio / Aunt / Female Doctor / Radio Host, Science Show Doubles for five characters – a lot of great range. The Tourist & Aunt have the most humor to their parts. The Female Doctor is very intimate with both John Dodge and Mrs. Swanson.
Sweetheart / Landscaper / Attendant #2 / Intercom Also doubles for five characters. Very strong sense of myth and intuition. The Landscaper allows us to see the Cop in a new perspective. The Sweetheart can also be very passive-aggressive.
